Organizational Unit Overview
The organizational entity, the Department of Health Services and Information Management (HSIM), comprises three academic programs: health services management (HSM), health information management (HIM) and MS in Health Informatics and Information Management (MS HIIM) in the College of Allied Health Sciences (CAHS). In addition, the HIM program maintains accreditation with its national accrediting agency, the American Health Information Management Association. The HSM program maintains a certification from its national oversight body, the Association of University Programs in Health Administration. Moreover, the department offers a service course, HIMA 3000, Medical Terminology for Health Professionals, for the entire university, three of four semesters (375 students). The entity has thirteen full-time faculty members and its recruiting for four more full-time faculty members. There are 1.5 FTE SPA and one student workers.
The Department of Health Services and Information Management at East Carolina University is seeking applications for a twelve month, full-time, tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in the area of Health Services Management.
Faculty member responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate students in research projects and/or theses, establishing a productive scholarly research agenda and funding, serving on and participating in departmental and college partnerships, and other service participation at the university, community and professional levels.
The department offers Bachelors of Science in Health Services Management and Health Information Management, a Master of Science in Health Informatics and Information Management. The department offers graduate certificates in Health Care Administration, Health Care Management (MBA), Health Information Management and Health Informatics.
The Department of Health Services and Information Management is part of the College of Allied Health Sciences which houses nine departments with programs at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels. Attached to the College is the medical library which provides a librarian dedicated to supporting allied health faculty and students. All classrooms are technology-enhanced (e.g., SMART devices, video capture).
The College of Allied Health Sciences is within the Division of Health Sciences and has a strong working relationship with the ECU Brody School of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the School of Dental Medicine, and the East Carolina Heart Institute offering many opportunities for collaboration in teaching and research. East Carolina University is also an integral part of the Vidant Medical Center, the regional medical center that serves 29 counties. Vidant Medical Center is a 900+ bed, level-1 trauma center which offers myriad collaborative opportunities.
East Carolina University, with an enrollment of 29,000+, is located in Greenville, North Carolina (population of 89,000). On the coastal plains, the area has mild winters and is 90 miles from the beautiful Crystal Coast and the capital city of Raleigh. It is within driving distance to Charlotte, Washington, D.C., Myrtle Beach, and the Smokey Mountains.
Earned academic doctorate from an accredited institution by time of appointment in health services management or a related field (e.g. health administration, public health, business administration). Candidate for the associate professor rank must have an established track record in research and publications.
Communication skills necessary for effective teaching, research, and service.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Teaching experience in both undergraduate and graduate courses typically found in a health administration curriculum with a strong emphasis in health administration, leadership, marketing, law and ethics, and professionalism. Experience with online and distance education is preferred.
