Temple University College of Public Health, a multidisciplinary academic center devoted to an innovative educational and research environment that brings a transdisciplinary perspective on health, wellness and social welfare, is seeking both experienced and early career researchers to join the Temple University School of Social Work.

We seek individuals committed to collaborative, interdisciplinary research in social work and other disciplines. There are many opportunities to collaborate with public health faculty in the College who target addressing disparities in the social determinants of health, improve university engagement with communities, and advance social justice. Senior candidates should have an active, externally-funded research portfolio and early career candidates should demonstrate involvement in funded projects and strong potential to obtain external funding as independent researchers.

Areas of research interest are critical national and community challenges such as child and family welfare, aging, HIV/AIDS, mental health, substance abuse/addiction, obesity, and chronic disease management. Individuals with expertise in research at community and organizational system levels are encouraged to apply. The College of Public Health has particular strength in cancer and related diseases/behaviors through Temple University’s Fox Chase Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

The School of Social Work. Dr. Philip McCallion, an international expert in aging, dementia and intellectual disabilities, joined Temple in 2017. Under his direction, SSW’s 30 faculty serve 800 students in CSWE-accredited BSW and MSW programs. The BSW program focuses on generalist practice and the MSW program requires advanced-year students to concentrate in a practice method and specialize in a field of practice. There is a strong commitment to the support of students already in the workforce, building interdisciplinary education and expanding educational opportunities.

The School is in its first year of delivering a fully online MSW program. Through a partnership with other disciplines within the College, MSW students can earn a concurrent MPH and additional joint degrees are in development. A strong Department of Field Education assists 500 students in securing and completing field placements. SSW’s field education contributes significantly to the College’s Office of Clinical Practice and Field Education where 2,000 students are placed annually with 1,200 community agencies. In the past year, SSW faculty contributed to over 40 continuing education opportunities for more than 1,000 participants supporting the School’s growth in answering career development needs for social workers.

The School of Social Work’s impressive research portfolio includes research on HIV/AIDS, mental health, substance abuse, health services, LGBTQ social and health issues, acculturation, aging, fatherhood, interpersonal violence, workforce readiness and poverty. The School of Social Work is home to the Fatherhood Research and Practice Network (www.frpn.org), which has funded 13 researcher/practitioner studies of fatherhood. In addition to potential collaborations within the School, research opportunities include collaborations with the Fox Chase Cancer Center, a NCI comprehensive cancer center, The Center for Obesity Research and Education, the Center for Social Policy & Community Development and other Temple schools and colleges including Business, Medicine and Law. SSW faculty partner with CPH colleagues in Health Administration and Policy, Nursing, and Social and Behavioral Sciences.

As part of the College of Public Health, School of Social Work faculty have access to the College’s excellent pre- and post-award support for sponsored research. There are additional supports and incentives for the development of funded research.

Qualifications. Applicants should hold a doctorate in social work, social welfare, public health or a relevant social science discipline and a research agenda appropriate to a research-intensive university. Individuals should demonstrate interest in working across disciplines to understand and intervene in factors that shape the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and populations. Holding a Masters in Social Work degree is preferred. For early career applicants, preferred candidates are individuals currently holding the rank of assistant professor or persons completing or having recently completed a postdoctoral position. Midcareer or senior applicants must hold a doctorate in a related discipline and a research record appropriate to warrant a tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. Cluster faculty hiring of research teams comprised of senior and early career faculty is encouraged.

The College. The College of Public Health, a constellation of 9 academic units of public health, health profession and social work disciplines, enrolls nearly 5,000 students in 8 undergraduate and 28 graduate degree programs. The College has seen remarkable growth and organizational expansion in programs, research profile, increase in rankings, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The College’s research focuses on social, behavioral, and environmental inquiries, medical interventions, and basic science and is sponsored by NIH, NSF, and other major funders. Collaborations include Fox Chase Cancer Center, the Center for Obesity Research and Education, Temple’s University Health System, other health systems, community health centers, and the Philadelphia Department of Public Health.

The University. Temple is an urban, research-intensive university located in Philadelphia. The University is moving up quickly in rankings. Temple is ranked by the National Science Foundation as among the top 100 universities in the country for research expenditures. Temple is the 6th largest provider of professional education in the U.S. and includes Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Podiatry, Law, and Dentistry. Temple is located in historic and culturally rich Philadelphia, the nation’s 5th largest city. The city was ranked 3rd by the New York Times as a world tourist destination.

Applicants & Nominees. Applicants should send a letter of interest, curriculum vita, and a 1-page research statement to cphsearch@temple.edu. Application review will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled. Nominations of outstanding faculty are highly encouraged.
