Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine

In response to the 19th-century tropical disease burden in New Orleans, Tulane University established the first public health school in the U.S. in 1912. The Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine has addressed pressing public health challenges for over a century.  The school is expanding its vital work and meeting future public health needs thanks to a historic gift from alumna Celia Scott Weatherhead. This support will attract leading faculty and ensure access for top students from diverse backgrounds, elevating Weatherhead SPHTM to a premier institution in the U.S. and globally.

Position Description

The Department of Health Policy and Management, comprised of 15 faculty members, focuses on health management and policy research. We prepare a diverse group of future leaders to improve healthcare delivery, increase access to care, reduce health disparities, and advance healthcare policy worldwide.

Faculty research in the department spans several critical areas, including - but not limited to - health insurance, substance use disorders, telehealth, vaccination policy, diabetes care, hospital markets, governmental public health, and managed care in the U.S. The department offers multiple master’s programs and a PhD program in health policy and management.

The Department of Health Policy and Management seeks a tenure-track or tenured faculty at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level to contribute to the School’s strategic initiatives. These initiatives include:

  • Health Equity Research - Advancing health equity outcomes, particularly in the South is a key component of this initiative. The school will continue to strengthen long-standing ties with the community, with an interest in developing a report on the status of health equity in the South. Health equity is already integrated into the curriculum, and a new specialization is being added to train public health practitioners with in-depth expertise in this area. Current projects include Partners for Advancing Health Equity(P4HE), the Society, Health and Racial Equity Lab (SHARE), and the Cost of Inequity
  • Gulf South Health Policy Institute - Led by alumnus Charles N. "Chip" Kahn, a prominent national voice in health policy, this initiative seeks to establish the premier institute focused on the health policy issues of the South. The Gulf South Health Policy Institute will examine and address issues confronting lawmakers, practitioners, and the public now and in the future.
  • Cancer Prevention and Control - Louisiana is ranked 5th in the nation for all cancer mortality, with an 85-mile stretch along the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans representing some of the highest incidence rates in the world. The Tulane Cancer Center, led by oncologist Dr. Stefan Grant, is leading the initiative to drive innovative research and training to address the cancer crisis in Louisiana and across the Gulf South. Uniquely positioned to train the next generation of interdisciplinary cancer researchers to improve the health of our Gulf Coast communities, Tulane recently finalized a partnership with LCMC Health to expand comprehensive and specialty care across Southeast Louisiana.
  • Artificial Intelligence and Data Science - The growing field of AI and data science presents a tremendous opportunity for public health innovation. Researchers at Tulane SPHTM are already planning to house AI and machine learning expertise at the school and to provide training through symposia and other methods for current and future practitioners.
  • Infectious Disease Epidemiology - As public health continues to face challenges related to infectious diseases, including emerging pathogens and epidemics, Tulane SPHTM is committed to advancing research and training in this critical area.

Additionally, the school and department have solidified research partnerships with local healthcare delivery systems to secure access to vital healthcare data for ongoing research projects. These partnerships bring together community-based healthcare sites and nationally recognized, leading research universities, resulting in collaborations necessary to advance health in Louisiana and the region.

Qualifications

The ideal candidates will have an earned doctoral degree in health policy and management, health services research, economics, sociology, public health, or a related field. We seek applicants with strong methodological skills, a track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, and teaching experience appropriate to their career stage. Additionally, we value a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in educational and professional environments.  Successful candidates will be expected to develop and sustain a strong program of research with extramural funding to cover a portion of the applicant’s salary.

Applicants will be evaluated based on their achievements and potential for continued success in funded research, publication, and teaching. Preference will be given to those with experience using diverse teaching methods, and prior engagement with communities of color and cultures other than their own.
