Position Title:
Director of the Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics (DP), Undergraduate Program Coordinator, and Lecturer in Human Nutrition

Department: School of Food and Agriculture

Bargaining Unit: AFUM

Purpose: The School of Food and Agriculture seeks candidates for a full-time, nine month lecturer position, with one month of summer salary, in the program area of Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSN). The candidate will direct the Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics (DP) and serve as the undergraduate Program Coordinator for the FSN program in addition to teaching DP courses.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
This is a 100% teaching, non-tenure track position, with reduced classroom teaching to accommodate the time spent managing the DP and undergraduate degree programs. The DP Director is responsible for the curriculum, students, records, program assessment, and all activities related to maintenance of program accreditation. The DP Director also mentors and advises students preparing to apply to a Dietetic Internship program. The successful applicant will be expected to teach several undergraduate DP courses. This position also serves as the FSN Undergraduate Program Coordinator, with responsibilities for some recruiting of undergraduate students in FSN, advising first-year students in FSN, teaching the NFA 117 Issues and Opportunities orientation course for first year students, coordinating faculty efforts in curriculum revision and outcomes assessment, facilitating advising of all students in FSN by other advisors, and maintaining student files. Additional responsibilities may include teaching graduate classes and serving on graduate committees, depending on the interests of the successful candidate.

Available resources at the University of Maine include the Mary Simcock Lynch Clinical Nutrition Lab, including equipment for conducting dietary and physical assessments. The Dr. Matthew Highlands Pilot Plant and commercial kitchen include food processing equipment and are available for teaching activities.

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:

  • A minimum of an M.S. degree is required by date of hire in Nutrition, Dietetics, or a closely-related discipline.
  • An RD/RDN credential is required, with at least three years of professional experience post credentialing.
  • Excellent communication skills, desired.
  • Successful experience in college-level instruction, mentoring, and interdisciplinary collaboration, desired.
  • Experience in dietetic practice preferred.

Position Type and Work Year: This position is a full-time, nine-month (September to May) non-tenure-track lecturer appointment, with one month of summer salary.

Work Environment: The University of Maine, located in Orono, is the state’s land grant university. The School of Food and Agriculture ( has 35 faculty members, over 450 undergraduate students, and about 50 graduate students. In addition to FSN, the School offers B.S. degrees in Animal and Veterinary Sciences, Environmental Horticulture, and Sustainable Agriculture, as well as graduate degrees in a range of programs. School research efforts focus on the sustainable production of plants and animals, on nutritious diets that promote human health and well-being, and on safety and production issues important to food and agriculturally-related businesses. The wide range of academic interests in our School offer new faculty many opportunities to participate in, and develop, multi-disciplinary teams.
