Temple University’s College of Public Health is leading a new movement to reimagine the future of public health. Through transdisciplinary research and interprofessional education, our students, staff and faculty embrace public health as a catalyst for individual and community change in pursuit of the common good. The Center for Obesity Research and Education (CORE) invites applications for faculty whose careers are dedicated to obesity research.

The Center for Obesity Research and Education. CORE is a University-wide group of faculty investigators whose mission is to facilitate interdisciplinary research on the etiology, prevention, and treatment of obesity. A particular focus is a greater understanding of obesity-its causes and consequences-among underserved groups. Current faculty have ongoing programs of research investigating childhood eating behavior, the relationship between sleep duration and obesity, interventions to help women lose weight after childbirth, and behavioral and psychosocial aspects of bariatric surgery. In addition, CORE has a number of affiliate members throughout the Temple University community with interests in obesity and its comorbidities. Additional information on CORE, including its current members, affiliates, and areas of concentration, can be found at

Qualifications. Applicants should have an earned doctorate in Kinesiology, Epidemiology, Nutrition, Health Services, Public Health, Nursing, Social Work or another discipline relevant to the academic programs in the College. We specifically seek candidates with high-quality programs of research supported by extramural funding that have (or are on track to develop) national and international prominence in their areas of concentration. CORE faculty are expected to maintain competitive and funded research programs, which account for the majority of their professional effort. Candidates with a track record of conducting innovative, interdisciplinary, and collaborative research are preferred. Expertise in physical activity, epidemiology, nutrition, health communication and policy, or geospatial analyses of the built environment is especially desirable. We value diversity and seek individuals committed to inclusive practices in research and education. Compensation, benefits and start-up are competitive.

The College. CORE is located within the College of Public Health, a constellation of 9 academic units of public health, health profession, and social work disciplines enrolling 4,600 students in 8 undergraduate and 28 graduate degree programs. CPH is fully accredited by the Council on Education in Public Health as a school of public health, has seen remarkable growth and organizational expansion in configuration of programs, interprofessional education, research funding, and interdisciplinary collaboration. CORE is an active participant in the College’s research portfolio that includes behavioral, social and environmental inquiries, medical interventions, and basic science. Particular research strengths include obesity, cancer, mental health, aphasia and other language disorders, HIV/AIDS, organ and tissue donation, and aging. In addition, a new Center focused on Community Engaged Research and Practice is being launched.

The College has the highest level of extramural funding per faculty member and second highest amount of total research dollars among the 17 schools and colleges at Temple University. Much of this research support comes from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Defense as well as a wide range of foundations. CPH faculty collaborate with the Center for Public Health Law Research, the Center for Obesity Research and Education, Fox Chase Cancer Center, the Temple University Health System and other area health care systems.

The University. Temple University is an urban, research-intensive Carnegie R1 university located in historic and culturally rich Philadelphia, the nation’s 6th largest city.
