The University of Auckland is seeking to appoint an internationally renowned and connected scholar with a commitment to having a positive impact in the New Zealand community, to the endowed Hugh Green Foundation Chair in Addiction Research. The successful individual will have a proven academic record in addiction research and will assume a leading role in New Zealand and internationally through high profile research into the causes, management and/or treatment of alcohol and drug dependence and other addictive behaviours.

The Chair will work closely with the FMHS Centre for Addiction Research (CFAR). The centre was established in 2012 to bring together researchers committed to the field of addiction research and to disseminating research findings within and beyond the academic community to inform policy, practice and debate in the prevention and treatment of addiction. Working closely with treatment providers, the broad, multi-disciplinary approach of CFAR (from molecular through to societal research) brings a unique and practical perspective.

The Chair will demonstrate personal credibility and the skills to provide leadership and continue to build their research profile, nationally and internationally, and to extend the reach and influence of University of Auckland research in this area to Government and policy-makers. The opportunity is open to those from relevant disciplinary backgrounds.

Those with interests in the following areas will discover considerable collaborative opportunities here:

  • Service improvement
  • Workforce development
  • Brief interventions
  • Pharmacological interventions
  • Co-existing mental health and addiction issues
  • Impact of addiction on families and communities
  • Behavioural and public health intervention for gambling

Additionally, research interests relating to harm reduction, recovery, breaking poverty cycles, criminal justice, policy, and population health will also be of particular interest.
