The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at Simon Fraser University (SFU) seeks applications from early and mid-career scientists with an outstanding research record to be appointed as a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Social Epidemiology. We seek a scholar who has a PhD or equivalent credential in a relevant field who has demonstrated strengths in combining rigorous epidemiological methods with theory from the social sciences to study the effects social, structural, behavioral and/or environmental factors have on human health and well-being across the lifespan.

The ideal candidate has expertise in social epidemiology, principles of social justice, and community engaged scholarship across any of the Faculty of Health Sciences research challenge areas (www.sfu.ca/fhs/our-research/research-activities). These include planetary health, HIV and emerging infectious diseases, optimizing developmental trajectories across the life-course, policy and systems influence on health, mental health and substance use and harnessing Big Data and technological and social innovation for health. Training and experience in applying an equity framework in conducting research is a plus. In particular, programs of research that attend to our core cross-cutting themes of global health, gender and social inequities, Indigenous health, and underserved communities will be prioritized.

The Faculty of Health Sciences was created in 2005 with a mission (https://www.sfu.ca/fhs/about.html) to improve the health of individuals and populations and to reduce health inequities through excellence in interdisciplinary research and education, in partnership with local, national and global communities and with a commitment to social justice. The successful candidate will join a diverse and dynamic team of more than 50 multi-disciplinary faculty members and will have the opportunity to engage with and teach outstanding students in the PhD, MSc, MPH, and BA/BSc programs. FHS maintains collaborative agreements and partnerships with the BC government, regional health authorities, research centres, and provincial, national and international health agencies. Our community engaged work is exciting and at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary work in health. The faculty includes three Canada Research Chairs, five Endowed Chairs, and eight additional faculty members with external salary awards adding natural community partnerships.

To apply for this position, please submit a full curriculum vitae, a letter of application, a brief statement of research plans for the next 5 years (two page maximum), a teaching statement (one page maximum), and the names and contact details of three academic references. Applicants are encouraged to describe how their research interests provides health equity perspective on human health and how it could engage community. The teaching requirement for this position is three courses per year, thus the teaching statement must detail teaching experience and interests and identify upper-level undergraduate and/or graduate courses of teaching interest.
