Brief Description of Duties:

The Occupational Therapy (OT) Program at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center is seeking candidates for the position of Program Chair. SUNY Downstate is one of the nation’s leading urban medical centers located in Brooklyn, NY. SUNY Downstate is a strong academic environment that endorses interprofessional collaboration within the University and beyond. This is a tenure-track, 12-month Associate Professor or Professor position, offering a competitive salary and benefits beginning July 2019.

The successful candidate must demonstrate high skills in administration, teaching, research, clinical experience and a record of scholarship. The individual must be committed to the concepts of interdisciplinary teamwork and increasing the diversity of the program’s faculty and student body. The Program Chair will oversee and develop program curricula, policies, and procedures; teach, manage budgets, secure faculty hiring, and evaluate/mentor the program’s faculty. The Program Chair will also provide leadership for growing the program, including the development of an entry-level OTD program. The Program Chair is expected to work closely with the Occupational Therapy Program faculty and staff, the Dean and Associate Deans of the College of Health Related Professions, and university-wide faculty and staff. The Program Chair will report directly to the Dean of the College of Health Related Professions.


All successful candidates must undergo various background checks, maintain credentials required for continued employment and adhere to the SUNY-DMC UHB Principles of Behaviour. Clinical Faculty and Allied Health professionals must receive and maintain Medical Board authorization.

Required qualifications, skills and accomplishments:

  • Eligible for or holds occupational therapy licensure in the state of New York.
  • Doctoral degree (PhD, EdD, DPS, OTD, ScD).
  • National certification.
  • Demonstrate expertise with leadership and management.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of full-time experience teaching in higher education preferred.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of clinical experience in occupational therapy practice.
  • Clinical expertise in any areas of occupational therapy practice will be considered.
  • Grant writing and acquisition preferred.
  • Ability to mentor students through directed clinical/community research or program development projects consistent with a line of scholarly work. Preference may be given to candidates with an established line of scholarly research.
  • Ability to mentor and advise faculty.
  • Experience using contemporary instructional technologies to deliver curricula, including distance learning modalities.
  • Experience using management systems to support teaching.
  • Active involvement and/or leadership role in local, state or national professional organization is required.
  • Knowledge and experience with ACOTE guidelines.
  • Organization and program planning skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
