Now Accepting Applications for Spring/Summer 2020
Contact: ApplyEMPH@mssm.edu

Description: The Department of Environmental Medicine and Public Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is excited to announce an opening for a postdoctoral fellow to undertake environmental epidemiologic research. Our research program addresses the range and biologic effects of multiple exposures using quantitative epidemiology and advanced statistical approaches. This position offers extensive research resources in phenotyping, exposure science, and data analysis and operates in a highly interactive and supportive environment for junior investigators to develop their careers. The EMPH Department receives more than $40M per year in extramural funding and is home to the newly established Institute for Exposomic Research, designated for novel research in the full range of internal and external environmental exposures.

Research Opportunities: The EMPH Department hosts several large, longitudinal research studies and NIH-funded projects involving epidemiologic, genetics/epigenetics, complex mixtures, and molecular biomarkers which provide opportunities for cutting-edge hypothesis testing and interdisciplinary collaboration. Current projects include: Programming Research in Obesity, Growth, Environment, and Social Stress (PROGRESS), a 10+ year cohort study of mothers and children in Mexico City offering a rich biospecimen repository, social stress data, and clinical assessments of brain development, obesity, and respiratory and renal health; the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Data Center, which incorporates dimensional assay data to develop new projects related to children’s health; the Human Health Exposure Analysis Resource (HHEAR) Data Center, dedicated to studying the effects of a full range of environmental exposures; and the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP) Data Center, hosted by Mount Sinai, in charge of collecting, managing, analyzing, and preparing data for research.

About Us: The Icahn School of Medicine is part of the Mount Sinai Health System, the largest health care provider in New York City, and our department is located just across the street from Central Park in Manhattan. Postdoctoral fellows constitute a central component of the school’s research and structure, and more than 600 fellows are supported by ISMMS’s offices of postdoctoral affairs and career services. We recognize that a diverse environment enhances the learning experience of all trainees and the biomedical research enterprise in general. We are committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in research and education, as well as to increasing the representation of individuals who are members of groups that are underrepresented in science and medicine.

Salary and Benefits: This position offers a substantial compensation package, including an annual salary equivalent to the current NIH stipend rate for fellows plus $18,500 per year, a tailored benefits package, and generous paid time off. A $1000 annual travel allowance is available; additional funding for research-related travel is subject to availability and is at the department and PI’s discretion. Postdoctoral fellows have many opportunities to participate in experiential learning and professional development programs, including grant writing workshops, teaching and science communication courses, an annual retreat for fellows, institutional symposiums, weekly departmental seminars, individualized career advisement sessions, journal club, mock study sections, and more.

Requirements: The ideal candidate will have a doctoral degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field with a strong interest in multidisciplinary research and academic career development. Programming proficiency in SAS or other languages such as R is required. Fellows are expected to write at least 2 scientific papers per year, participate in departmental and institutional seminars, attend research conferences, and develop their own research grant proposal. Fellows may audit coursework for training in new areas and will also have opportunities to teach in the Master of Public Health program.

How to Apply: Individuals who have or will soon have their doctorate should send a brief summary of their research interests and experience and a curriculum vitae to: ApplyEMPH@mssm.edu. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply before April 15, 2020.

  • Mount Sinai Health System is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. We recognize the power and importance of a diverse employee population and strongly encourage applicants with various experiences and backgrounds.
