The University of Massachusetts Lowell is seeking a visionary experienced faculty leader and scholar to serve as the chair of its Department of Public Health. The appointment is expected to be at the level of associate or full professor with tenure.
The Department of Public Health is located in UMass Lowell's Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences, a dynamic, growing college that prepares professionals and scientists in a wide range of health fields. Public Health enrolls 550 students within its undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The department currently consists of 15 full-time faculty; seven new energetic and engaged faculty have been hired in the last four years, and two tenure-track faculty are being recruited this year, with additional hiring planned. The department features a large research program with vibrant community partnerships and engagement opportunities in the areas of social, behavioral, nutritional and environmental health enriches and supports educational programs. The faculty are diverse in subject matter expertise and productive in scholarly activity. Three well-funded research centers are affiliated with the department: the Toxic Use Reduction Institute, the New England Consortium (hazardous waste worker training) and the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production. The department is applying for CEPH accreditation.
As chair, the successful candidate will assume responsibility for: 1) overseeing the department’s academic operations; 2) working with faculty and the dean of the college to identify and promote the department’s strategic priorities, including growth of external research funding and CEPH accreditation; 3) implementing initiatives to promote student success and faculty development; and 4) forging and maintaining connections and partnerships with external stakeholders (including alumni and partner agencies), as well as other academic units in the college and the university. The department and college have leadership teams that support the chair in carrying out the academic mission of the department.
The successful candidate will have a record of outstanding scholarship and leadership in the field of public health, commensurate with the rank of a tenured associate or full professor. The candidate will offer evidence of effective academic leadership (including strong interpersonal skills and managerial competence) and a strategic vision for: 1) promoting student success; 2) mentoring and supporting faculty; 3) enhancing the department’s research enterprise; and 4) attracting top students and faculty.

The department has strong ties to the community of Lowell, a mid-sized city with a diverse population located 25 miles northwest of Boston.

•PhD, ScD, or other earned doctorate in public health or related areas
•Evidence of excellence in leadership and interpersonal skills
•Strong track record in externally funded research

•Demonstrated excellence in mentoring of post-docs and junior faculty, teaching and service on campus and beyond
•Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse groups and interdisciplinary teams
•Previous rank of associate or full professor with tenure
•Experience in fostering partnerships within the university and with outside partners
•Experience in a prior leadership role
•Experience recruiting faculty with strong research agendas and mentoring them through the tenure process
•Experience in both undergraduate, graduate and accredited public health programs, with the ability to develop, implement and evaluate curricula
