DIVISION NAME

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
WPI seeks a full-time Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in Global Health whose research, scholarship, teaching, and advising expertise will support the growth of a socially and globally engaged polytechnic. This role will support undergraduate and graduate programs in project-based learning, global studies and global health, and will include team teaching and travel with student groups as an academic advisor. We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate interdisciplinary, community-engaged, justice-centered research and teaching that focuses on experiential and project-based learning. We are also interested in candidates whose scholarship might include, and reach beyond North America to complement our existing work in Africa, Latin America, and/or Asia-Pacific. Candidates should be comfortable with innovative methodologies that might include qualitative/quantitative approaches, fieldwork, multi-site studies, and mixed methods.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The area of specialization is flexible and could include social, economic, and/or environmental determinants of health, global health policy, social and/or statistical epidemiology, community health, epidemiology, environmental health, medical anthropology, and health education and communication. Experience and interests could include interdisciplinary, collaborative, comparative, and transregional dimensions that connect to (for example) climate change, inequality, urban planning, or public policy and governance. This position offers opportunities for collaboration with connected and engaged scholars and teachers, in interdisciplinary research and team teaching and advising. The successful candidate will benefit from WPI's faculty mentorship program, support from the Morgan Teaching and Learning Center, and will also be provided with career development, guidance, and training to ensure a pathway to success.

About The Global School & The Department of Integrative and Global Studies at WPI

The Global School prepares students to collaborate with others to address global problems, through undergraduate and graduate programs founded on the university's half-century of leadership in project-based learning-an educational approach infused across the entire curriculum. Our students and faculty engage deeply with partners to address social, technological, ecological, and economic challenges through interdisciplinary, purpose-driven research.

The Department of Integrative and Global Studies (DIGS) consists of interdisciplinary and collaborative faculty and staff dedicated to global research and engagement, and to supporting: WPI's Great Problems Seminar (GPS) for first-year students; our junior year, interdisciplinary projects requirement; and the MS in Community Climate Adaptation. See https://www.wpi.edu/academics/departments/integrative-global-studies .

The GPS is a team-taught, project-based, two-course sequence in which first-year students explore a global problem in sections organized around issues such as housing, food security, sustainability, water or health. See: https://www.wpi.edu/academics/undergraduate/great-problems-seminar

Our junior-year project, the Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP) is a distinctive, team learning experience that challenges students to address problems at the intersection of science, technology and society. See https://www.wpi.edu/project-based-learning/project-based-education/global-project-program . Because the IQP can be completed as a student's full course load for one term, students do not need to be on campus to complete an IQP. Most students complete their IQPs at one of over 50 project centers in 31 countries around the globe. Faculty both prepare teams of students for this research experience and travel with students for 7-8 weeks to advise their projects. WPI is committed to providing off-campus project opportunities to all of its undergraduates.

The Department, in collaboration with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, recently launched a new Master's Degree program in Community Climate Adaptation which is designed to engage graduate students both in courses on campus, and in research at our global project centers. See https://www.wpi.edu/academics/study/community-climate-adaptation-ms

WPI offers an undergraduate minor program in Global Public Health, enrolled by around 20 students, with 2 core courses, including Fundamentals of Global Public Health, Disease Detectives: An Introduction to Epidemiology, and the Senior Seminar in Global Public Health. See https://www.wpi.edu/academics/study/global-public-health . Planning for a new Master's Degree program in Global Health is currently underway and the position will have the opportunity to work collaboratively to develop this graduate program.

We are looking for someone who possesses/demonstrates:

A PhD in International or Global Health, Public Health, Health Promotion, Epidemiology, Development Studies, Anthropology, Science and Technology Studies, Sociology of Health and Medicine, Human Geography, Racial and Ethnic Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, or a related field with interest and/or experience in global health.

Research track record or potential for outstanding research as demonstrated by publications and alternative forms of scholarship (creative works, presentations, etc.).

Teaching excellence, and experience with team teaching and engaging students in on & off-campus experiential learning in collaboration with diverse organizational settings and diverse communities.

Productive interdisciplinary collaborations (grants, publications, team-taught courses) with colleagues from a variety of disciplines, including STEAM disciplines.

Applicants must have demonstrated commitment to fostering justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace and beyond, in their scholarship, teaching, and service.

  • An interest and ability to periodically travel with students as an academic advisor for 7 week terms.

Language skills and international work/research experience.
