Job Description

As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University is seeking an Open Rank Professor of Exercise and Sports Science to promote our Catholic Franciscan Mission and Identity by teaching and directing research projects being conducted by our students. The candidate should have a strong interest in teaching, advising, and mentoring our students.
 
The candidate should be comfortable teaching a broad range of topics within the overall field of exercise and sports science. Within that field, it is expected that the candidate will have a center of expertise in one or more of the following three areas: (1) strength and conditioning, (2) physiology of exercise and/or (3) clinical exercise physiology.
We invite applications for a full-time faculty appointment in Exercise and Sports Science to start no later than January 2024.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.
  • Have the expertise and academic background to be able to teach undergraduate (BS degree) students in a wide range of exercise science courses.
  • Advise students on their academic progress and their intended career paths.
  • Actively participate in existing student retention.
  • Be active in new student recruitment and advising efforts, including those that occur over the summer.
  • Remain current in areas related to academic and intellectual areas of excellence.
  • Mentor students working on research projects.
  • Participate on departmental and university-wide committees.
  • Actively work on course-level and curricular revisions.
The ideal candidate will also:
  • Have the expertise and academic background to be able to teach graduate (MA and MS degree) students in several of our graduate-level courses.
  • Enter this position with the ability to launch at least one research program, using our current laboratory and university-wide resources, suitable for participation by both our BS and MS students.
  • Establish a research program suitable for participation by our students pursuing an MS in clinical exercise physiology and/or in physiology of exercise.
  • Establish academic and research collaborations with faculty members across campus.
  • Be an active member of the American College of Sports Medicine.
  • Be an active member of MS student thesis committees, in and outside of the primary area(s) of expertise.
  • Mentor adjunct faculty members and MS students working as teaching assistants.

 

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Possess a graduate degree in some area of exercise science or a closely related area..
  • Have outstanding teaching and lecturing skills and provide evidence of excellence in teaching. Preference will be for candidates who are experienced in the use of student-centered, hands-on, inquiry-based, novel, and modern teaching methodologies.
  • Have a broad enough background to be comfortable teaching at multiple different undergraduate-levels.
  • Be qualified to mentor undergraduate students working on research projects.
The ideal candidate will:
  • Possess a terminal (Ph.D. or other doctoral-level) degree in physiology of exercise or a closely related area.
  • Arrive with a backround that predicts the ability to create a research program that is well suited for participation by our MS students.
  • Be comfortable using all of our major laboratory instrumentation both in teaching and in research, and use them in both teaching and student-centric research.
  • Be qualified to mentor masters level students working on research projects.
  • Create productive research collaborations to include undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members within and outside ESS.
