The University Council will appoint the Director as prescribed by the Charter and the Statutes of the University at the end of the appointment process. The term is five years, typically begins on June 1, and may be renewed once.

 

The Director’s responsibilities

As a high-level leader and manager, the director of a school plays a key role at the University of Montreal.

He or she oversees a wide variety of activities in order to ensure the proper functioning and development of his or her school, all in compliance with the University’s authorities and regulatory framework. In a non-exhaustive manner, four broad areas can be identified where the Director will need to apply his or her skills and expertise:

- Strategic: develop the school’s strategic directions and planning and ensure they are in line with those of the University;

- Operational: develop, deploy and execute the action plan outlined in the planning;

- Administrative: efficiently manage and be accountable for human, financial and material resources;

- Interpersonal: use political acumen and influence through listening and openness to communicate, work collegially, develop talent and mobilize teams.

On a day-to-day basis, the Director:

- is responsible for the planning, organization and management of the school and the execution of its decisions;

- will act as a true ambassador of his/her school; he/she develops and maintains a network of partners, makes public presentations, particularly to government bodies, to ensure the development of the school at the local, national and international level;

- ensures good school governance: ensures the proper functioning of school bodies; chairs meetings of the school council and the school assembly; enforces policies and regulations;

- acts as a key player in the philanthropic development and engagement of graduates at both the school and University levels and devotes a significant portion of their time to doing so;

- directs studies, including administering and reviewing curricula at all cycles. He or she ensures the application of pedagogical regulations concerning his or her programs, and makes any necessary consultations in the development of new programs;

- promotes, supports and highlights research, innovation and creation within its school;

- contributes to academic life by making recommendations and sharing the school’s perspective on various files submitted by senior management;

- promotes the development of interfaculty initiatives in teaching and research;

- establishes the annual school budget;

- participates in the appointment and promotion of professors and researchers, and in the selection of other school members in accordance with University regulations;

- actively promotes the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation with First Peoples and accessibility.

 

Qualifications required

The candidate:

- Has an excellent understanding of the optometrist profession

- Has strong experience within the local and international eye care system

- Presents a competitive research profile

- Is a Fellow member of the American Academy of Optometry (constitutes an asset)
