Faculty Position in Food and Nutrition Equity

All Ranks – Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor

Tenure-Track or Tenured Research and Teaching Appointment

The Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University seeks candidates at any rank for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position on the topic of equity in food and nutrition.

The Friedman School is one of the leading institutions in the world for scholarship and policy analysis in food and nutrition. Our mission is to create trusted science, educate future leaders, and have real impact that improves the nutritional well-being of people worldwide. The School distinguishes itself by its breadth of scholarship, entrepreneurial spirt, and real-world translation. We bring together diverse experts who are committed to work that equitably improves the nutritional well-being of people around the globe, with a history of and commitment to multi-disciplinary research on health disparities, such as the impact of income inequality and other social determinants of health on nutrition and food security, diet-related chronic diseases, food systems, and agricultural production. Our research, teaching and civic engagement spans U.S. and international work on child nutrition and health, nutrition assistance programs, international food aid, humanitarian crises, global dietary transitions and corresponding disease burdens, costs and access to food among other topics.

This search is part of a cluster hire across Tufts University to recruit and bring together multiple new faculty across domains of scholarship that jointly focus on novel and rigorous approaches to investigate and address structural racism, health disparities, and other geographic and social inequities related to food, nutrition and hunger, health, climate, sustainability, and agricultural production. Participating Tufts institutions include the Friedman School, the School of Arts & Sciences, the Fletcher School, the Tufts School of Medicine, and the Tufts Medical Center Department of Internal Medicine.

The Friedman School’s interdisciplinary focus and integrative nature complement the intellectually rich environment across Tufts University, a "Research Class 1" university, top-25-ranked undergraduate institution, and member of the Association of American Universities. Home to seven graduate and professional schools across three campuses, Tufts University prides itself on its culture of cross-school partnerships. Located in downtown Boston on the Health Sciences Campus, Friedman School faculty members have extensive opportunities for academic and external collaborations, as well as participation in the rich intellectual life of Boston and the wider Northeast U.S. region.

The School is recruiting one or more new faculty members to expand upon, complement, and synergize with our current areas of strength by bringing new expertise, teaching, and scholarship focused on nutrition equity, food and nutrition security, food justice, and health disparities. Areas of focus could include, for example, nutrition assistance programs and community interventions; food markets, economics and policy; land use, agriculture and rural-urban environments; food industry practices and regulation; or demographic and social change. Successful candidates may be focused on the U.S. or other regions, on particular nutritional or health outcomes, or improved methods for qualitative and quantitative research. Novel and rigorous approaches to investigate and address structural disparities and inequities are of special interest.
