The Research Officer provides technical support to research, monitoring and evaluation activities for domestic and international programs implemented by CCP, with direction or support from higher-level research and evaluation officers (REO). The Research Officer assists REO to implement the continuum of research activities from conception and design to results interpretation, reporting and dissemination. S/He supports the development of research protocols, selection of research vendors, training of field teams, and implementation of fieldwork. S/He also coordinates and supports the work of research, monitoring and evaluation staff in CCP country offices, including research consultants and vendors, to implement research, monitoring and learning activities. Individuals in the Research Officer position have advanced education and/or training, and knowledge and experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods including research designs and statistical analysis using analytical software, and can conduct data analysis with support from higher-level REO. The ideal candidate should be organized and able to effectively coordinate and manage the research needs for multiple large-scale programs. The Research Officer will travel internationally to deliver short-term technical assistance, with support from REO staff.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

The Research Officer is expected to perform the following activities competently:

I. Theory, Frameworks & Models

Demonstrates knowledge of public health, communication and/or social psychological theories.
Contributes to application of SBCC theory and models to R&E studies w/Direction.

II. Research & Evaluation

Research Design

Conducts literature reviews to support R&E designs, IRB protocols w/Support
Coordinates technical input from in-country staff w/Direction

Tools Development

Develops drafts of R&E quantitative and qualitative data collection tools w/Support
Develops mobile and electronic data collection tools w/Support

Field Work

Develops drafts of Requests for Proposals for R&E studies, including data collection, and reviews competitive proposals w/Support
Develops and implements field training w/Support
Coordinates R&E data collection and quality assurance in the field per approved IRB protocol w/Direction


Contributes to the development of research reports and manuscripts (includes scientific writing) presentations, posters, blogs and other products, using writing that is accurate, clear with logical flow, and appropriate for different audiences, w/Support
Develops data visualization resources for reports and other products w/Support
Presents research findings at external and internal meetings and conferences w/Support

III. Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL)

MEL Design

Conducts literature reviews to support MEL designs, IRB protocols w/Support
Coordinates technical input from in-country staff w/Support
Assists with identification of key indicators and development Performance Monitoring Plans (PMPs) for projects w/Support

MEL Data Analysis

Compiles and analyzes monitoring data to provide program feedback w/Direction

IV. Statistics and Analysis

Quantitative Analysis

Assists with R&E data cleaning and data preparation for analysis w/Support
Performs quantitative analysis using statistical software (STATA, SPSS, R, SAS) and interpretation w/Support

Qualitative Analysis

Assists with R&E data preparation and codebook development for analysis w/Support
Performs qualitative analysis using software (Atlas.ti. Nvivo, Deddose and others) and interpretation w/Support

V. Business Development

Contributes to proposal development (including draft text and PMP) w/Direction

VI. Leadership and Professional Development

Participates in internal CCP, R&E and MEL learning activities (includes staff meeting, CoP, StratComm, TIPS, others) Participates and shares learning opportunities that advance R&E and MEL skills
Expands into diverse communication and public health project areas w/Direction
Leads the organization of Research in Practice Brown bags w/Support
Provides technical backstop for R&E staff, as needed w/Support
Manages students and temporary staff w/Support.
Manages working groups w/Support

VII. Collaboration and Communication

Involves and fully informs team members and supervisors in a timely way.
Provides technical backstop for R&E staff, as needed w/Support


Masters Degree (MPH, MSPH, MS) in communication, public health, or related behavioral science with at least 3 years of relevant experience. At least one year is international experience conducting field research activities. Working knowledge of French language is required.

Preferred qualifications:

Doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH, ScD) in communication, public health, or related behavioral science. International research experience in Francophone countries.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
