Appointment: Eight-month, full-time, tenure-stream; position starting Fall 2024



The Department of Health and Human Development in the University of Pittsburgh School of Education invites applications for a tenure-stream faculty position for its Exercise Science program at the assistant, associate, or full professor level.

Recognizing the field’s interdisciplinary nature, candidates are sought who have an established research program with direct relevance to exercise science/physiology, particularly research that is applied, clinical, and/or translational in nature. Successful candidates will have a doctorate in exercise physiology or a related field, demonstrate potential or have a track record of obtaining funding to support a research program, and experience in mentoring graduate students and teaching at the university level. Qualified candidates at the Associate or Full Professor level will be expected to have a record of publication, research productivity, funding, teaching, and service that is commensurate with tenure guidelines within the School of Education and the University.

With over 90 degree and certificate programs, we approach learning as intertwined with health, wellness, and human development. The Department of Health and Human Development blends health promotion, wellness, and exercise physiology with applied developmental science and evidence-based practices to address 21st century problems in diverse regional, national, and global real-world contexts. Our department offers exercise science-related degrees at the BS, MS, and PhD and EdD levels. Our program has strong research collaborations with faculty across the University, including the School of Medicine, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, School of Engineering, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).

  • Earned doctorate with scholarly training in exercise physiology or a related field;
  • Strong potential (for assistant) or demonstrated evidence (for associate/full) of external funding to support a research program;
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals;
  • Demonstrated excellence in (or promise of) university-level teaching in courses relevant to exercise science;
  • Experience advising and mentoring graduate students.
