The Ellmer College of Health Sciences (ECHS) at Old Dominion University (ODU) is seeking an accomplished scholar for a tenured Endowed position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. This position is open to faculty who have an active and sustained externally funded line of research that aligns with one or more of the five academic schools within ECHS: (1) School of Dental Hygiene, (2) School of Exercise Science, (3) School of Medical Diagnostic & Translational Sciences, (4) School of Rehabilitation Sciences, and (5) School of Speech-Language Pathology. ECHS faculty are supported by research grants from the NIH, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, private industry, foundations, and professional organizations. This prestigious position offers a reduced teaching load, a competitive salary, and an annual research budget to lead high-impact research related to health science. The initial appointment to this endowed professorship will be for a period of five years and is renewable based upon annual performance.
The five Schools within ECHS are located in four buildings on ODU’s main campus, including the brand new 120,000 square foot ECHS building that houses state-of-the-art research labs, faculty offices, teaching spaces, and two public facing clinics. A full list of the available research labs and clinics in ECHS can be found at https://tinyurl.com/2txtbjd4. The appointee selected will have a research program that compliments and extends the scholarship of ECHS faculty, and aligns with our current research facilities/capabilities. Significant investment has been made in our research infrastructure, so we desire a faculty member who will integrate within our current labs/facilities. A critical mass of ECHS scholarship falls under one or more of the following research pillars: (1) Healthy Aging across the Lifespan, (2) Innovative Practices, and (3) Clinical Education. ECHS has also recently launched the Health Enhancement & Resiliency for those who Serve(d) (HEROES) Initiative focusing on Active-Duty, Veteran, and First Responder health, so applicants in this domain would be welcome.
On July 1, 2024, ODU and Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) were integrated to create the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences (VHS) at Old Dominion University, which is the largest and most complex academic health sciences center in the Commonwealth of Virginia. VHS is comprised of five academic units: (1) Ellmer College of Health Sciences, (2) EVMS, (3) School of Health Professions, (4) Ellmer School of Nursing, and (5) the proposed Joint School of Public Health. The establishment of our academic health sciences center affords unprecedented collaborative opportunities for basic and translational sciences across the VHS Institutes, Centers, and Departments ( https://tinyurl.com/5n7fxhxt) . The appointee will have a nationally and/or internationally recognized research program and a strong track record of securing external grant funding to elevate the research profile of ECHS. Teaching responsibilities will be limited and may occur in any area of expertise across the ECHS programs. The appointee will also be expected to mentor faculty colleagues and graduate students. Some service to the school, college, university, and profession is expected. The expectation for the Endowed position is that high research productivity is continued, and external grants are obtained to support research. The appointment is effective July 25, 2026.
