Assistant Research Scientist, G-14 – The incumbent will participate in all aspects of the surveillance and testing, including molecular and culture-based testing of human clinical samples. Primary responsibilities will include inoculating and monitoring cell cultures for virus identification, and extraction and PCR for virus detection and characterization. Additional duties will include development and validation of new tests, QA/QC procedures, viral sequencing, data analysis and general laboratory housekeeping duties.

Research Scientist 1, G-18 – The incumbent will participate in all aspects of the surveillance and testing, including molecular and culture-based testing of human clinical samples. Primary responsibilities will include inoculating and monitoring cell cultures for virus identification, and extraction and PCR for virus detection and characterization. Additional duties will include the review of testing results, assembling and writing validation reports and preparing laboratory data for manuscripts and reports.

Research Scientist 2, G-22 – The incumbent will participate in and supervise research projects including molecular assay and platform development and validation. Primary responsibilities will include performing a variety of molecular assays for the investigation of new diagnostic tests, reporting of results, review of QA/QC reports, supervision of junior staff and students, database management and project coordination. Additional duties during outbreaks will include testing of clinical specimens and assisting the laboratory director with the coordination of the response efforts of the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications:
Assistant Research Scientist, G-14 Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, infectious diseases or related natural sciences field and one year of post-degree professional experience in the field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.

Research Scientist 1, G-18 Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, infectious diseases or related natural sciences field and two years of post-degree professional experience in the field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.

Research Scientist 2, G-22 Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology, infectious diseases or related natural sciences field and three years of professional experience in that field; or a Master’s degree in the appropriate field and two years of such experience; or a doctorate in the appropriate field.

Preferred Qualifications:
Assistant Research Scientist, G-14 The preferred candidate will have a background in virology or molecular biology. Experience in a public health setting with a background in infectious diseases is preferred. Experience with cellular and molecular techniques, including cell and virus culture, nucleic acid extraction, real-time and conventional RT-PCR assays. Experience with BSL-2 laboratory work is preferred.

Research Scientist 1, G-18 The preferred candidate will have a strong background in virology and/or molecular biology. Experience in a public health setting with a background in infectious diseases is preferred. Experience with cellular and molecular techniques, including cell and virus culture, nucleic acid extraction, real-time and conventional RT-PCR assays. Experience with BSL-2 laboratory work is preferred. Excellent communication, organizational skills, and scientific writing experience.

Research Scientist 2, G-22 strong background in virology and molecular biology. Experience in a public health setting with a background in infectious diseases is preferred.
Experience with coordination or supervision of research projects is preferred, including grant-writing, multi-site collaborations, database maintenance, human subject research ethics training and IRB application and reporting processes. Experience with the development of molecular assays and platforms including design, troubleshooting, clinical trials and quality assurance. Experience with outbreak response is preferred, including past laboratory participation in response efforts to infectious disease outbreaks. Knowledge and experience with BSL-2 laboratory work is preferred. Excellent communication and organizational skills are preferred including experience with scientific writing and presentation.
