THE OPPORTUNITY: A Campus-wide Cluster Hiring Initiative

With a strong commitment to advancing diversity in research, thought and representation, the Department of Public Health in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Purdue University invites applications for a tenure-track position in the area of Health Disparities, as part of a cluster hiring initiative in Public Health, Health Policy, and Health Equity. A national leader in the graduation of Black and African American doctorates in the physical sciences, computer science, and veterinary medicine over the past 5 years, Purdue’s track record of supporting diversity dates back well over a century and is rooted in our land-grant mission. This cluster, comprised of 14 new faculty members across four colleges - Health and Human Sciences, Liberal Arts, Libraries and Information Studies, and Pharmacy - is just the first wave of a larger, multi-year cluster hiring initiative totaling 40 FTE overall that aims to expand our research enterprise, add to the range of perspectives of our faculty, and promote a supportive community for all students. The Department of Public Health in the College of Health and Human Sciences (HHS) seeks applicants in the area of public health with a research focus in health disparities. We encourage scholars interested in race, ethnicity, geography, gender, sexual orientation, sexual identity, socioeconomic status, disabilities, or other relevant factors associated with disparities in healthcare access and health outcomes to apply. This will be a nine-month, academic year appointment with the possibility of internally or externally funded summer support.


About the Department of Public Health
In an exciting new step in 2019, Purdue’s Public Health program was elevated to become the Department of Public Health, which is now rapidly growing its faculty and building on its already well-established programs. The department is a CEPH-accredited program and a member of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health. The Department is committed to conducting outstanding research, educating students in a diverse and inclusive environment, and promoting health through engagement with the public. The Department is home to 40 tenured/tenure-track and clinical faculty, continuing lecturers, and limited term lecturers. There are over 250 graduate students and over 185 undergraduate students. Research areas include health promotion and disease prevention, women’s health, community-based participatory research, health disparities, rural health, and health communication. Degrees currently offered include the BS in Public Health (residential), MPH (residential, hybrid, online), MS in Public Health, Master of Health Administration (online), and PhD in Public Health (residential).

Faculty in Public Health are involved in a wide range of college and cross-campus initiatives, including the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, the Center for Health Equity and Innovation, the Center on Aging and the Life Course, the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering, the Purdue Institute of Inflammation, Immunology and Infectious Disease, the NCI-funded Purdue Center for Cancer Research, the Purdue Acceptance and Inclusion Consortium, Purdue’s Cultural Centers, the Purdue Autism Research Center, Discovery Park, and others within the 135 university-approved centers and institutes. A new hire in health disparities would support multiple HHS signature areas including “Developmental Health and Wellness,” “Healthy Lifestyles and Vital Longevity” as well as “Sustainable and Thriving Communities and Organizations” (
