About the opportunity

The Physical Activity, Lifestyle, and Population Health Research Group (PALPH) is located within the Charles Perkins Centre and the School of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney and has expertise in large epidemiological cohort research, international consortia, measurement, and exercise science trials. PALPH led aspects of the WHO 2020 Physical Activity Guidelines and is ranked the top 0.1% most highly cited groups globally (Clarivate). The PALPH research portfolio includes epidemiology and trials of physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep, and alcohol, as well as methodology development and evaluation and systematic consolidation of already collected and prospectively planned data. Among other projects, this program involves work related to the Prospective Physical Activity, Sitting, and Sleep consortium of accelerometry data (ProPASS); work on intermittent lifestyle physical activity; and analogous projects. The broader program of work is led by Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis.

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated Research Fellow /Senior Research Fellow (Level B or C) to provide leadership and contribute to the above research programs. The right candidate is expected to have worked extensively on large population datasets and possess very strong statistical and evidence synthesis skills. Experience in working with cohort studies, and device-based (e.g., accelerometers) physical activity datasets is highly desirable. 

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • provide leadership and project management to the ProPASS consortium
  • provide academic leadership and project management for research projects including project design, planning, ethics, tracking, implementing, and reporting
  • provide mentoring and research supervision to PALPH staff and research students
  • lead projects involving data acquisition, linkage, harmonisation, pooling, and management of large cohort studies
  • lead the development of high impact primary research and meta-analytic publications for submission to leading peer reviewed journals.

The duties of the position outlined above are not exhaustive, and the position holder will be expected to be co-operative and flexible, undertaking such other duties as may from time to time be reasonably expected of a member of staff in the University, and as requested by the Chief Investigator.

 

About you

To be successful in this role, you have:

  • a PhD in physical activity/sedentary behaviour, epidemiology, public health, or analogous area
  • expertise and research experience in physical activity or sedentary behaviour or sleep, or accelerometry or analogous areas
  • a strong track record of epidemiological publications (ideally cohort studies) in high impact journals as a lead and/or senior author
  • strong statistical skills and excellent working knowledge of ideally more than one statistical package (R, SAS, SPSS, STATA, etc.)
  • some experience in meta-analytical and/or other advanced data synthesis methods (e.g., traditional meta-analysis, individual participant meta-analysis)
  • excellent quantitative data analysis skills and an interest in large scale epidemiological research and data synthesis
  • experience with funding applications for research grants and/or research fellowships.
