The Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University seeks an energetic, accomplished, and inspiring leader to serve as the first Executive Director of the Tufts Food and Nutrition Innovation Institute. This is a full-time, 3 year limited term, dependent on funding, position, reporting directly to the Dean of the School.

The world faces an existential nutrition crisis. Poor nutrition is the leading cause of death and disability globally, producing staggering healthcare costs and lost economic productivity. Our food system is also degrading our natural resources, generating and exacerbating population disparities, and threatening our nation’s military readiness. The public increasingly recognize this global nutrition crisis, and are demanding products that are healthier, more sustainable, and more authentic and transparent. Yet, at the same time, consumers, industry, investors, and policy makers are often deeply confused on the science underlying these concepts, limiting progress and success.

These forces are creating enormous disruption in the food sector. Yet, the resulting innovation, new products and companies, and capital investments remain fragmented and not always science-based. The Friedman School is in a unique position to bring together cutting-edge science, companies, investors, and the non-profit sector to train a new generation of leaders, launch new ventures, and catalyze science-based innovation and entrepreneurship, all aligned to help create a healthier, more equitable, and more sustainable food system.

The candidate should have at least 10 years of experience in one or more of the following: entrepreneurship, management, business, industry relations, and academics. Candidates should have had experience creating, obtaining funding, and launching a start-up company, nonprofit, or related venture. Candidates must have leadership experience with strategic and/or program planning, program management with P&L experience, excellent communication skills, and be able to effectively manage diverse groups in a complex environment. Experience in science and business is required; additional experience in higher education is preferred.

The Executive Director will report to the Dean of the Friedman School and interact widely with other School leadership, faculty, staff, students, and advisors. Candidates must be able to work both independently and collaboratively with School leadership, faculty, students, external stakeholders such as companies, accelerators and incubators, and our Innovation Council members and Entrepreneurship Advisors. As this is a new position, successful candidates will thrive on working in uncharted environments and building on strong foundations including the expertise and reputation of the Friedman School to make the Tufts Food and Nutrition Innovation Institute the "go-to" scientific partner for relevant ventures in food, nutrition, agriculture, and wellness.
