Job Description Summary
POSITION AND AVAILABILITY: Twelve-month, tenure track position, Professor and Head, Department of Nutritional Sciences; position is available as early as spring 2023.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The responsibilities of the Head are to provide visionary leadership and overall management of the Department of Nutritional Sciences. The Head also serves as the senior faculty administrator and promotes excellence in teaching, research, and extension/outreach programs. The position demands professional level duties to include:
Providing academic and administrative leadership to the Department.
Providing leadership for faculty development, program development and assessment, grantsmanship, long-range planning, budgeting, public relations, and recruitment and retention of diverse students and faculty.
Supervising and evaluating personnel.
Oversight of Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) and outreach activities, as well as engagement with the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station.
Serving as part of the College’s leadership team.
Serving on university committees.
Developing and maintaining community and business partnerships.
Serving as a liaison to administration, alumni, and the community.
Addressing student issues.
Maximizing use of space and physical facilities.
In addition, the Head advocates for department interests, needs, and programs, which includes leadership in fundraising/development activities and working with industry and advisory boards.
SETTING: The Department of Nutritional Sciences http://humsci.auburn.edu/nutrition/ is affiliated with the College of Human Sciences http://humsci.auburn.edu/chs/. Nutritional Sciences employs 10 full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty, has an enrollment of approximately 200 undergraduate students and 60 graduate students, and offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degree programs in Nutrition that include campus-based programming as well as a master’s degree distance education option. The department offers three distinct undergraduate study options in Nutrition Science, Nutrition and Dietetics and Nutrition and Wellness. The Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) is professionally accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). The department also offers MS and PhD degrees in Nutrition. Opportunities to engage in collaborative research are supported by ACES and the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station. ACES operates in all 67 counties as the primary outreach organization for the land-grant functions of Alabama A&M and Auburn University. East Alabama Health, Harrison College of Pharmacy, and Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine provide additional opportunities for translational research. The Boshell Diabetes & Metabolic Disease Research Program in the College of Veterinary Medicine offers opportunities for nutrition faculty to engage in interdisciplinary research in the areas of diabetes and metabolic diseases https://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/boshell/. QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must possess an earned doctorate and have academic experience in one of the following: 1) nutrition science; 2) biological science 3) biochemistry; 4) immunology; 5) public health, or 6) a related discipline at the time employment begins. Academic credentials must represent excellence in teaching, research, and/or extension/outreach. The candidate must be experienced and eligible for appointment as a tenured full professor and Head at the time of appointment. The successful candidate also will demonstrate:
An understanding of the breadth and depth of the different departmental constituencies e.g., undergraduate and graduate studies.
Knowledge of State Cooperative Extension Systems, University Outreach, and Agricultural Experiment Stations.
Excellent interpersonal skills and effective communication with faculty, staff, stakeholders, parents, and students.
Leadership, administrative and organizational skills, and budget/resource management ability.
Experience with accreditation processes, personnel management expertise, and recruitment skills.
The ability to secure and sustain grant/contract funding for research, outreach, and development.
The successful candidate must have strong academic and industry networks and meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States when the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.
