Lehman College seeks a faculty member for its Exercise Science program. The Department of Health Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate professorship in the Exercise Science program beginning in Fall 2020. The Department of Health Sciences houses a number of programs including: Dietetics, Foods and Nutrition; Exercise Science; Health Education and Promotion; Health Services Administration; Recreation; and Therapeutic Recreation. Programs share some core courses. The faculty in all of the programs are both research active and committed teachers.

Primary responsibilities include teaching and scholarship in areas of expertise across Exercise Physiology and Testing and Prescription, conducting metabolic tests such as VO2max and EKG at the undergraduate and graduate level. Additional responsibilities include academic and research advising and service to the University, College, and Community.

Lehman College’s BS in Exercise Science program offers two tracks: Pre-physical Therapy and Exercise & Movement Science. The new MS in Human Performance and Fitness Program has accepted its first student cohort to begin classes this Fall. The programs utilize the Human Performance Laboratory with its state-of-the-art equipment and additional resources of the College’s APEX facility, including fitness and weight training centers.

The Lehman College campus is located in Bronx, New York and is a Senior College within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Lehman is the only four-year public college in the Bronx and is recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution. The college serves mainly undergraduate students preparing them for employment, the professions and further study. The teaching load is 18 hours per year and although the college is predominantly teaching focused, faculty at Lehman are active in research, scholarship and creative works. Service to the College, University and Community is part of the mission as is a clear commitment to student engagement including advisement. Teaching is reduced for junior faculty over the first five years for scholarly development and all faculty are actively encouraged to seek external funding. Opportunities are available for faculty development and travel awards. Lehman College and CUNY internal funding is available through competitive grants for scholarship support.

The School of Health Sciences, Human Services and Nursing houses four departments: Health Sciences; Social Work; Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences; and Nursing. All departments offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees, including a Doctorate in Nursing Practice that is expected to admit its first cohort in 2020. The school is home to the CUNY Institute for Health Equity. Faculty in the School are active scholars and include principal investigators of numerous federal grants. Departments in the School actively engage with community and government partners to support evidence-based practices and health equity, with a special emphasis on urban populations. The faculty are also strongly committed to high quality teaching and preparation of ethical and skilled health and human service professionals.

Ph.D. degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology or a related area is required on commencement of the appointment. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement and to recruit and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Active involvement in professional organizations, sincere commitment to students, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution are also required.

ACSM and /or NSCA Certification preferred. Candidates should have experience and ability to teach in the areas of Exercise Science, including such course topics as Exercise Physiology, Testing and Prescription, Kinesiology and Biomechanics, Strength and Conditioning as well as the ability to supervise both undergraduate and graduate-level capstone requirements (e.g. internships and culminating experiences).
