Postdoctoral Research Associate in Pediatric Cardiovascular Research, Oklahoma Children’s Hospital & OUHSC
A postdoctoral fellowship is available in the Pediatric Cardiovascular Research Laboratory of Dr. Harold M. Burkhart, Director of the Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgical program at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital and the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC). This is a multidisciplinary laboratory consisting of collaboration with Dr. Arshid Mir (Director of Pediatric Cardiology) and Dr. Chung-Hao Lee (School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering). We are seeking a highly motivated and independent postdoctoral fellow, with expertise in image-based cardiovascular computational modeling for congenital heart conditions. Dr. Burkhart’s research projects provide opportunities to have major, positive impacts on patients born with congenital heart conditions, such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and atrioventricular canal defect, by developing patient-specific surgical planning strategies using state-of-the-art computational technologies. The lab also has previously funded projects focusing on stem cell therapy for HLHS, biomechanical and microstructural characterizations of tricuspid heart valve tissue, and in-silico biomechanical modeling for the cardiac valvular systems.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly integrative, translational and productive research group, with high-impact papers in top-tier journals including the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, Acta Biomaterialia, and Annals of Biomedical Engineering. The ideal candidate will be reliable, personable, highly motivated, and have demonstrated the ability to work independently. The candidate should be open to explore new opportunities and disciplines. The candidate is also expected to assist in writing grant proposals and will be highly encouraged to submit fellowship applications (both intramural and extramural) in order to help career development.
Other responsibilities will include communicating results to the scientific community through publications and presentations, and supervising graduate students, clinical residents, and laboratory technicians. Weekly attendance and presentation of data at lab meetings is expected. Presentation of results for submission of manuscripts to clinical and/or internationally recognized journals is expected for this position.
Job Requirements:
Our ideal candidate will have:
-
A Ph.D. in the field of bioengineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or similar field
-
Prior research experience should include bio-solid/bio-fluid computational modeling and image-based reconstruction of 3D geometry of pediatric cardiovascular systems
-
Minimum of 2-3 year(s) experience with finite element analysis
-
Experience with Python and/or other programming languages
-
Experience with manuscript writing, statistical analysis, and preparation of figures for data/results is required
-
Experience with virtual reality, 3D printing, and other techniques for visualizing pediatric hearts and heart valves is a benefit, but not required
-
Experience with the scientific process of research study design, IRB approval is preferred
-
A strong communication skill
-
High level of initiative and technical proficiency and ability to collaborate within a highly interdisciplinary group
-
Good record keeping skills and follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment
Salary & Benefits:
The position is full-time for one year with the option to extend dependent on the postdoctoral fellow’s performance and available funding. Salary will be based on the NIH stipend scale and will be commensurate with skills and experience. The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) offers postdocs most employee benefits.
Application Instructions:
Applications should submit a CV (with contact information of a minimum of three [3] professional work references) and cover letter in electronic format (only) to Dr. Harold Burkhart, Director of the Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgical program at OUHSC at: harold-burkhart@ouhsc.edu
