The College of Arts & Sciences (COAS) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Worldwide (ERAU-W) seeks a dynamic, nationally recognized academic leader who will serve as Chair for the Department of Security and Emergency Services (SES). This position will include a tenured faculty appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank. The successful candidate not only will lead the existing faculty and programs in SES, but also will guide a strategic college-wide focus area in Emergency Services. This flagship interdisciplinary focus consists of new faculty positions across all COAS departments that collectively (with existing faculty) will solidify a strong group of expertise in the broad interdisciplinary area of Human Security and Emergency Services. Several strong faculty hires will join this group in August 2019, with additional hires planned over the next few years. These faculty already are working to develop new research and academic programs in SES, including the implementation of a new Master’s degree in Emergency Services in August 2019 and the development of a National Center for Excellence in Emergency Services.

The successful candidate will fill a critical leadership role within the College and across the Worldwide campus, with the responsibility and resources to promote a vibrant, growing set of academic programs that fill a nationally identified need. The appointee will lead all efforts associated with developing interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate degree programs in SES, including recruiting new faculty, establishing industry and other external partnerships, and leveraging opportunities to work with departments across the University in a co-curricular team environment. The new SES Department Chair will be provided ample time and resources to accommodate responsibilities of leadership, program development, and management for this broad interdisciplinary faculty team.

SES currently offers a BS in Emergency Services (BSES) that has seen remarkable growth, now serving over 180 undergraduate majors. The program is highly acclaimed, recently receiving the #1 ranking from Best Colleges for Online Emergency Services Undergraduate Programs. The BSES also is a recognized degree program of Fire Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) and carries accreditation from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC). Additionally, SES offers a bachelor’s degree in Homeland Security and two master’s degrees in Cybersecurity Management & Policy and Human Security & Resilience.

Other COAS Departments include English, Humanities & Communication; Mathematics, Physical & Life Sciences; and Social Sciences & Economics. In addition to degree programs, COAS annually provides over 2,000 sections of general education courses as part of every degree program at ERAU-W, with a focus on developing students’ capacity in critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, information literacy, communication, scientific literacy, cultural literacy, and collaboration. The Worldwide campus has an enrollment of 23,000 students, delivering courses globally online via Canvas, synchronously via EagleVision to both homes and classrooms, face-to-face at over 130 locations, and in a blended format. ERAU-W earned the #1 ranking in 2019 for Best Online Bachelor’s programs from U.S. News & World Report, and has held this prestigious position for three of the past five years.

Initial review of applications will begin July 1, 2019, and will continue until the position is filled; expected start date is January 2020.
