The Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina is seeking a visionary leader to serve as Chair of its top-ranked Department of Exercise Science. The Department offers academic programs at the doctoral (PhD and DPT), masters (MS and MPH), and undergraduate (BS) levels. The PhD program was ranked No. 1 in the USA in 2015 by the National Association of Kinesiology, and the undergraduate program is one of the largest with 1150 majors. The Department is home to 30 faculty members whose research and outreach programs are funded by a broad range of federal agencies, private entities, and philanthropic organizations. Several faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their research acumen and professional accomplishments.
The University of South Carolina has been designated by the Carnegie Foundation as a "very high research activity" institution. The Department of Exercise Science is a central contributor to the Arnold School of Public Health’s research mission, and the School is a University leader in scholarship with over $30 million in annual research funding. The successful candidate will have demonstrated a high level of scholarly achievement, an established record of research funding, teaching excellence, and professional leadership commensurate with a tenured academic appointment at full rank. In addition, the individual will be an established academic leader who can facilitate faculty, staff, and student development and build collaborations with intramural and extramural partners. Qualifications include an earned doctorate in exercise science, kinesiology, physical therapy, athletic training, or related discipline.
The University of South Carolina is located in Columbia, the state capital and the center of a metropolitan area that is home to over 800,000 residents. Columbia is situated in the center of the state, approximately 100 miles from both the Atlantic coast and foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Columbia area offers a wide range of cultural and recreational resources including Lake Murray, Riverbanks Zoo, Congaree National Monument, Koger Center for the Performing Arts, the SC State Museum, and the EdVenture Children’s Museum. The climate is sub-tropical featuring long, temperate falls and springs; warm and humid summers; and short, mild winters.
