Departmental Overview

As a national collegiate leader, UC Berkeley's University Health Services (UHS) provides comprehensive medical, mental health, insurance and health promotion services to all Berkeley students, and a variety of health programs for faculty and staff. Approximately 65,000 visits occur annually including Primary Care, Urgent Care, Occupational Health and Specialty Clinics. Services are designed to minimize the impact of illness, emotional distress and injury on studies and work. Provides a range of psychological support including assessment, individual and group counseling and case management for students seeking support related to trauma healing and addressing alcohol and other drug (AOD) concerns in an effort to promote general wellness and academic success. The incumbent will work to increase access to care for student communities that have been identified as underserved, including but not limited to, the LGBTQ+ community and students of color.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Under general supervision, performs assessment, diagnosis, psychotherapy, and case management of cases specific to the specialty areas of the unit with a focus on various forms of trauma, including sexual violence & sexual harassment, and on a range of alcohol and other drug concerns.
  • Provides brief counseling, crisis assessment and intervention, group counseling, and consultation for students. Provides consultation to faculty and staff. Serves as unit representative for various committees related to the areas of specialty for this role as needed.
  • Provides alcohol and other drug harm reduction individual and group counseling. Support students who are referred for mandated AOD assessment and/or workshops.
  • Participates in quality assurance & improvement efforts for the unit, which includes an annual peer review.
  • Participates in the supervision of Post-MSW Fellows, and the training of Post-MSW Fellows, Doctoral Psychology Interns, and Post-Doctoral Fellows. This may include seminar leadership and/or guest lectures for the cohort.
  • Provides consultation, training and outreach to campus on specified areas of expertise, which will involve some evening hours.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Masters in Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy and current CA state license (LCSW or LMFT) plus the ability to supervise within one year post-hire.
  • Advanced knowledge of mental health concerns with a particular focus on sexual violence, other forms of trauma and substance use concerns.
  • Advanced understanding of concerns faced by historically marginalized communities and culturally-informed models of care.
  • Advanced individual counseling skills including assessment, psychotherapy, and case management trauma-informed lens.
  • Comprehension of group dynamics, facilitation of groups and problem solving.
  • Working knowledge of developmental and mental health issues including dual diagnoses that are commonly faced by a college population.
  • Effective verbal and presentation skills, computer literacy.
  • Demonstrated experience providing culturally-relevant and responsive counseling services, supported by a social justice lens, to communities that have been underserved.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting and working with people from diverse ethnic, cultural, religious, socio-economic, sexual orientation, and gender identities and backgrounds in a multicultural college environment.
  • Working knowledge of applicable laws and standards of professional conduct.
  • Demonstrated expertise working independently and as a collaborative team member with diverse client groups, multidisciplinary staff, and an array of community partners.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in communication skills, coordination and consultation.
  • Understanding, experience, and comfort working with clients with AOD concerns form a harm reduction perspective.
  • Organization and planning skills to meet deadlines and work within a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Supervision skills, including a working knowledge of BBS requirements for pre-licensed clinicians.

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 2 years post-licensure strongly preferred.
  • Experience as a supervisor of associate social workers (pre-licensure).
  • Experience working with college student populations reflective of the UC Berkeley campus.
  • At least three years of experience working with multi-culturally diverse populations
  • including individuals with a range of trauma, dual diagnoses, intimate partner violence, harassment, stalking, and alcohol and other drug harm reduction counseling utilizing a range of treatment modalities.
  • Working knowledge of utilizing and navigating electronic health records.
  • Strong self-care practice to promote resilience and reduce impact of secondary trauma.
  • Bilingual/multilingual with experience and comfort providing therapy in a language other than/in addition to English
