The GIFT of SJTU is one of the first 12 Institutes of Future Technology approved by the Ministry of Education of China. GIFT aims to form an internationally high-quality faculty team in the fields of health, energy, and extreme manufacturing, build a frontier research and teaching platform, carry out international scientific research cooperation, promote interdisciplinary research, and achieve academic breakthroughs. GIFT has opened three new majors in Health Sciences and Technology, Sustainable Energy, and Extreme Manufacturing.
Center for Brain Health Research & Innovation is an important part in the Health Sciences and Technology direction of GIFT. The center seeks to provide leadership in brain research and address the critical problems related to brain health. Currently, the main research directions of the center include (but not limited to):
(1) Brain-Computer Interface (BCI): including invasive and noninvasive deep brain stimulation, towards fundamental research in integrated circuits and chips for BCI, as well as neural regulation therapy for various diseases such as autism, major depressive disorder, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, etc.;
(2) Exploring the working principle of brain such as the mechanism of cognition, memory and computing, using techniques including neural signal processing, imaging, etc.;
(3) Pharmacological interventions and genetic regulation, for brain-related diseases and mental issues such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, etc.;
(4) Brain-inspired and neuromorphic computing, for novel artificial neural networks and digital twin of brain. The directions will keep expanding.
GIFT of SJTU is seeking an internationally renowned researcher to become director of the Center for Brain Health Research & Innovation. The candidate should be a distinguished scholar with a strong record of leadership and service with a vision in transforming the way we understand the brain, which still remains mysterious to people. The successful candidate should hold a doctorate degree and have the scientific breadth and vision needed to advance a multidisciplinary research center. The individual should hold a strong record of scholarly research in a brain-related area that will lead to an appointment as a tenured full professor in a relevant home department. The ideal candidate for director should have the ability to attract necessary resources, both financial and people. They will have solid communications skills with knowledge on promoting existing and emerging programs of related research, academic and industrial partnerships, and educational efforts. The director should have budget and management experience.
Working closely with the Dean of GIFT, the director will build strong relationships with faculty and external partners. The director will have experience in bringing together interdisciplinary teams, and in working effectively across university schools and offices. The director will lead the development of the center's strategic plan, including short- and long-term strategies and policies, develop objectives and ambitious goals, that build research teams and form new partnerships, and form new ways of thinking to solve some of the world's most difficult brain-related challenges, to make the center impactful globally.
GIFT is running a typical tenure system for faculty recruitment, promotion and evaluation. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications.
