The University of Missouri - Columbia (MU), invites nominations and applications for the Department Chair of Health Sciences, within the School of Health Professions.
The Department Chair for Health Sciences will lead a diverse team of award-winning faculty and staff members. Department faculty and staff are conducting significant interdisciplinary work in the areas of health policy, community health, health services, rehabilitation, social determinants of health, and public health.
MU seeks an outstanding educator and researcher with strong demonstrated leadership and development skills, to further advance excellence in the areas of teaching, research and service. We welcome profiles from candidates with outstanding teaching records and/or high profile scholars with a funded research agenda and a national reputation in any of the areas of health professions.
Responsibilities:
Developing a shared vision and strategy for the Department by actively engaging faculty, staff and School leadership
Serving as a strong leader, role model, and advocate for the Department to achieve the highest possible level of excellence in teaching, research and service
Providing effective mentorship for early- and mid-career faculty members to enhance teaching and scholarly accomplishment, and secure external funding
Driving the strategy for program innovations and curricula development to ensure an exceptional teaching and learning experience
Nourishing a collegial environment and promoting interdisciplinary and collaborative research within the Department, the School, and across MU
Recruit and retain diverse Tenure Track and Non Tenure Track faculty with remarkable track records in teaching and/or research
Managing the day-to-day operations, including personnel and resource management
Strengthening existing community partnerships, as well as nourishing relationships with prospective community partners
Required Qualifications:
Earned terminal degree in a field appropriate to the role
Academic accomplishments that merit an appointment at the rank of an Associate Professor or Full Professor with tenure
Prior administrative experience or leadership at successive levels of responsibility
Substantial background and experience in program innovation and curricula development
Strong commitment to inclusion, diversity and equal opportunity in all activities
Preferred Qualification:
Visionary, open-minded, respectful and approachable leadership style
Familiar with national trends in undergraduate and graduate health professions education and passionate about improving the teaching and learning experience
Committed to innovation and interested in advancing the work environment of interdisciplinary teams
Strong communication and excellent interpersonal skills
An understanding and commitment to the mission of an AAU Research 1 University, MU’s institutional values, and the land-grant mission
Interest to further engage with alumni and other external constituents to leverage and to encourage financial support to the Department, the School, and MU
The School of Health Professions is the home of seven Departments that offer 15 academic programs to approximately 3000 students.
The Department of Health Sciences is one of the fastest growing and offers the most popular undergraduate major at the University of Missouri - Columbia with nearly 2000 undergraduate students. It serves the citizens of Missouri through its outstanding research, award-winning teaching, experiential learning, and education of students in the areas of health services, health disparities, health policy, and pre-professional preparation for a variety of health care disciplines.
