The Department of Epidemiology at the University of Michigan, School of Public Health invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor to begin September 1, 2019. This position is a regular, full-time, three year position.

The School of Public Health at the University of Michigan is developing an online Masters of Public Health degree that begins in September 2019. The goal of this degree program is to leverage the flexibility of an online degree to prepare motivated students and working professionals to analyze, communicate, and lay the groundwork for a healthier tomorrow. Joining together the interdisciplinary strength of the Michigan Public Health tenure-track faculty with the pedagogical focus and strong commitment to teaching among clinical faculty our goal is to create a world-class online program whose curriculum empowers learners to develop innovative solutions to complex health challenges that arise from the interplay of social, environmental, economic, political, and technological forces that shape human health globally and locally. We expect the learners in this online program to come from a wide variety of backgrounds in the health professions, health industries, government, and non-governmental organizations who are looking to advance their career. Clinical teaching faculty will be key the development and delivery of learner-focused courses that utilize state-of-the-art pedagogical techniques for online and residential Michigan Public Health courses.

Michigan Public Health seeks to create a community of pedagogical practice. We anticipate this core team of faculty to be dedicated to exploring, developing and training others in different pedagogical strategies that improve online or hybrid learning outcomes. Given the innovative nature of the program, we would expect faculty in the Clinical track to publish on the relationship between pedagogical strategies, learner experience and learning outcomes associated with online teaching, and use these findings for continuous improvement of our program and its pedagogy.

Responsibilities of this Clinical Faculty position will include:
- Co-developing with tenure-track faculty and independently developing online and hybrid residential courses consistent with departmental needs
- Staffing two courses per semester for three semesters in the online and residential programs (fall, winter, spring/summer)
- Creating authentic learning assessments and transparent grading rubrics, including taking the lead and working with the Office of Foundational Learning and Practice to ensure assessments meet CEPH accreditation requirements
- Creating, monitoring, and tending to the social connection, cohesion, and networking of the learners in each course or cohort to ensure a high quality educational experience
- Emphasizing the practice and practical skills that accompany the video content and theory that is often delivered by the tenure-track faculty
- Outreach to community organizations, alumni, industry partners and other important voices and examples that enable or enhance the online learning experience
- Holding virtual office hours as well as addressing student inquiries and individual educational needs
- Leading the evaluation of learning outcomes including posting grades
- Being an ambassador for the online program
- Facilitating integration and continuity of learners’ experience across different specializations, including the core courses.
Publishing on the experience of the design of online public health classes, and its relationship to learner experience and learning outcomes (i.e. new methods for building social connection, new methods for wide-scale engagement of practitioners in the online platforms, results from randomized controlled learning trials designed to evaluate how learning outcomes are affected by different learning technologies, etc.)
- Publish on their own substantive areas of interest.


  • The ideal candidate will have strong commitment to promote developing, implementing and evaluating best practices for high-quality, high-touch online and residential classes. Candidates must have a PhD in epidemiology or equivalent and prior experience (or strong interest) in online teaching.
