The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) College of Nursing invites exceptional nurse leaders to join the College as an Associate Professor or Full Professor in the Department of Biobehavioral Nursing Science. Faculty are dedicated to advancing biological, behavioral and clinical science for adults with complex health disorders, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and more. Department faculty are leaders in professional organizations and serve on national research and professional boards, such as the Scientific Review Sections for the National Institutes of Health, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, and the Board of Scientific Advisors of the National Cancer Institute.

Applicant's rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. Salary is based on 9-month academic appointments paid over twelve months.

Duties & Responsibilities

Teaching: Associate Professors and above participate in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Teaching consists of traditional classroom lectures, small group seminars, distance learning, and clinical teaching of small groups. Graduate faculty are also responsible for student research advisement including supervising masters, doctoral, and post-doctoral students' research. Faculty are expected to demonstrate significant contributions and scholarship within the context of teaching. Teaching assignments are determined in collaboration with the department head.

  • Tests effective teaching methods, materials, and evaluative techniques
  • Demonstrates mastery in teaching based upon student and peer evaluations
  • Demonstrates ability to meet diverse learning needs of students
  • Disseminates knowledge on teaching and curricular issues through publication in top tiered journals

Research: Associate Professors and above are expected to have a developed an independent program of research and may contribute within a collaborative research team. In nursing, research productivity is expected to influence the practice of the discipline and the multidisciplinary nature of health care. Faculty are expected to mentor students into research roles that may result in joint presentations and publications.

  • Demonstrated history of impactful program of research as PI or MPI as evidenced by track record of external funding for highly competitive major research grants (eg. NIH, NSF, DOD, NLM, NEA, major foundation awards)
  • Evidence of impact of scholarly work by: e.g. citation by other scholars, media coverage, invited colloquia, invited keynote speaker at national or international conferences
  • Evidence of mentoring student research/scholarship through presentations, grants, or publications

Service: Associate Professors and above are expected to contribute to the service mission of the university. Participation may include service at local, regional, national, and international levels.

  • Participates on university committees
  • Participates in community advisory groups and committees
  • Contributes to local, regional, or national professional organizations
  • Provides consultation at regional or national levels
  • Assumes administrative responsibilities, as appropriate 

Minimum Qualifications: Minimum education is a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), or comparable research-focused doctoral degree in nursing or related sciences, and a distinguished scholarship and teaching record commensurate with appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor at the time of appointment.
