The Office of the Dean of Students is charged with all of Student Life activity, including the well-being, emotional and safety of students. This position, situated within the Center for Support and Intervention, is charged with strategizing, developing, communicating and implementing comprehensive programs that create awareness around the prevention and intervention of violence and hazing on campus.
Given the size of Cal's student population, a need for a large-scope, violence prevention initiative and on-going awareness is imperative. The "Bears that CARE: Take Action (BTC)" Program was created and launched to the UC Berkeley community. BTC is an active bystander initiative whose objective is to create a community of care, where community members are able to recognize and intervene by using creative tools (CARE model) to de-escalate a situation that could be potentially harmful.
This position organizes and manages campus wide violence and harm prevention programs by creating and implementing new initiatives in partnership with campus stakeholders to promote the Cal community's culture of care. One component of the position, management of the BTC program, has as an outcome of a Cal community free of violence and harm by encouraging members to become active bystanders who care for one another. The program supports an active bystander concept which means that members of the Cal community (students, staff, other stakeholders) take action when in a situation that could be potentially harmful to another person. This position also plays an important role in the continuing development of UC Berkeley's hazing prevention initiatives, including workgroup leadership and the creation and delivery of educational materials.
