Multi-position faculty hire

UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH
School of Education

The University of Pittsburgh School of Education is seeking faculty members to join our community at a time of great excitement, synergy, momentum, and action, particularly in relation to our explicit commitment to equity and justice in education. As a School, we are committed to determining sustainable ways to disrupt long-standing patterns of inequity and injustice in education. To that purpose, while each position has specific content qualifications and requirements, we invite applicants who engage in robust analyses of pressing educational issues and who investigate ways to interrupt inequitable educational practices through their teaching, research, and engaged activities.

We seek candidates with strong theoretical and methodological credentials (expertise in qualitative, quantitative, and/or mixed methods), a growing or an established record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, and the potential to compete successfully for external funding. This cluster hire is also invested in building faculty strength for teaching, advising, mentoring, and conducting research in our undergraduate, masters, Ph.D., and School-wide Ed.D. programs.

  • Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (in the tenure-stream) with a focus on Urban Education and Quantitative Methods. We seek a colleague who uses quantitative methods to investigate pressing issues and questions in urban education. This person would join our vibrant community of researchers and practitioners focusing on urban education, including faculty and staff who are affiliated with our School’s Center for Urban Education. This person would also add to our deep expertise in quantitative research methods, which cross-cuts all of our departments, as well as collaborate with colleagues to develop and apply quantitative research methods in pursuit of equitable, just, and sustainable urban educational change. Chair: T. Elon Dancy (tedancy@pitt.edu)
  • Associate or Full Professor (in the tenure-stream) with a focus on Health and Physical Activity. We seek a colleague who focuses on health and physical activity or exercise science with children or families, and within schools, neighborhoods, or other contexts. Researchers in physical activity and motor/cognitive development or exercise psychology are especially encouraged to apply. This person would join our vibrant community of researchers and practitioners examining critical issues in health and human development. Additionally, this person would contribute to our various degree programs, including undergraduate, master’s, PhD, and our School-wide EdD program. We see this hire as a catalyst to bridging existing strengths and inspiring new lines of cross-cutting work. Co-Chairs: Dr. Bethany Gibbs (bbarone@pitt.edu) and Dr. Tom Farmer (tfarmer@pitt.edu).
  • Assistant or Associate Professor (in the tenure-stream) with a focus on Education and Research-Practice Partnerships. Research-practice partnerships and community-engaged initiatives are central to our school’s new strategic plan. Thus, we seek a colleague who examines productive ways to coordinate research and practice in pursuit of equitable, just, and sustainable educational change. This person would join our vibrant community of researchers and practitioners focusing on the dynamics that characterize successful research-practice work, with emphasis on partnerships, organizational processes, networks, and/or improvement. We see this hire as a catalyst to bridge existing strengths within the School of Education and inspire new lines of cross-cutting work. The successful candidate will have opportunities to teach in our Ph.D., Ed.D., masters, undergraduate, and/or teacher preparation programs, as appropriate. Chair: Dr. Jennifer Russell (jrussel@pitt.edu).
  • Associate or Full Professor of Practice (non-tenure-stream) with a focus on Higher Education Administration/Leadership . We seek a colleague to join our vibrant community of researchers and practitioners who can contribute to the growth of our School-wide EdD program and our MEd program in higher education and student affairs. This colleague would bring significant higher education administrative leadership experience to the role of preparing reflective leaders and practitioners who will assume middle to advanced administrative and executive posts at higher education institutions, including but not limited to community colleges, regional comprehensive, liberal arts, and research institutions. This person would teach and advise graduate students, develop innovative program curricula, deliver blended and/or online courses, and engage in practitioner-focused scholarship in the pursuit of equitable, just, and sustainable educational change. Chair: Dr. Linda DeAngelo (deangelo@pitt.edu).
  • Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (in the tenure-stream) with a focus in Decoloniality and Equity Studies in Teacher Education. We seek a faculty colleague who can contribute to, and take a leadership role in, our teacher education program, and whose primary focus will be in decoloniality and equity in relation to history/social studies. With an active research agenda and a commitment to justice, civic engagement, and teacher education, this person would contribute to the preparation of students in our MAT social studies, MEd, and doctoral programs. Additionally, this person would also contribute to programmatic design and research direction in teacher education, decoloniality, social studies, and/or curriculum theory, and would strengthen our commitment to teaching, research, and engagement initiatives that center historical and contemporary perspectives of culturally, racially, and linguistically marginalized peoples and environments. Co-Chairs: Dr. Leigh Patel (leigh.patel@pitt.edu) and Dr. Amanda Godley (agodley@pitt.edu).

The School of Education is currently reorganizing to focus on three significant areas: Health and Human Development; Teaching, Learning, and Leading; and Educational Foundations, Organizations, and Policy. We value collaborative work that is not constrained by rigid boundaries, but that is committed to the interconnections among departments, centers, and institutes. Thus, successful candidates for these positions will have primary academic affiliation in one of our departments, but can also be cross-appointed within another department in our School. Relatedly, our School also offers opportunities to partner with our centers (e.g., Center for Urban Education, Healthy Lifestyle Institute, Office of Child Development), with our many partners at the university, and in various regional, national, and global communities.

Review of applications will begin in either late November or early December 2019.
