The Milken Institute School of Public Health at The George Washington University (GW) welcomes applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM). The Department of HPM is among the largest, most prominent, and research productive of all the departments at GW. The Department was formed in 2015 by merging the Department of Health Policy (HP) and the Department of Health Services Management and Leadership (HSML). The Department now spans health policy, health law, health economics, health services research, public health, social epidemiology, and healthcare management, leadership, and finance.
About the Department of HPM: Reporting to the Dean, the Chair will lead 42 faculty, 57 staff, over 100 adjunct faculty, and over 500 residential and online students. HPM is an engine of applied research with expenditures of nearly $30 million and its faculty are highly engaged in public arenas. For these reasons, this Chair position represents an uncommon opportunity to harness remarkable strengths across an incredibly broad portfolio of disciplines. The Department occupies a unique position in academic public health education. Given its location in Washington, D.C. and this national moment of great focus on healthcare, public health, and the policies behind them, the Department is in the right place at the right time. Faculty have oriented the Department to address the pressing health policy issues nationally. The Department has an extensive history of engagement in training individuals for leadership positions at some of the nation’s most prominent health agencies and systems. Its health policy program has been ranked among the best programs in health policy nationally. HPM’s combination of research faculty and tenured/tenure-track faculty have been remarkably successful contributing to the scholarship, policy, and practice in the field. They work with a cohesive, shared sense of mission and entrepreneurialism. The Department offers multiple degree programs, including MPH, MHA, MS, DrPH and a new PhD program in health policy, as well as other joint degree programs, such as MPH-JD, including both residential and online education. The successful candidate will build on the excellence in Health Policy and Management, extend the Department’s interdisciplinary reach, leverage the resources of the University, effectively manage the Department’s organizational structure and research and academic operations, as well as mentor junior faculty and students. The search committee seeks a Chair who is committed to advancing and leading the mission of the faculty, staff, and students in scholarship, policy, and education through service and scholarship.
Qualifications: The School seeks an applicant who is tenured or tenure-eligible at the rank of Professor, with demonstrated leadership and management experience, as well as national or international prominence in scholarship, in one of the many disciplines related to Health Policy and Management.
