The Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health (MEZCOPH) at the University of Arizona (UArizona) invites applicants for the Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. We seek a strategic leader and distinguished scholar who has established expertise and leadership in Epidemiology or Biostatistics. The ideal candidate has demonstrated the ability to lead and contribute to interdisciplinary research, teaching, and/or service teams. At the UArizona, we value our inclusive climate, and we seek individuals who have experience working with diverse students, colleagues, and communities.

We are seeking a dynamic epidemiologist or biostatistician to provide leadership and vision for the Department; to build on the strong foundation of research, teaching, and service of our faculty and students; and to foster an intellectual environment that supports diverse perspectives and excellence. We seek to strengthen innovation in instruction and research, to stimulate transdisciplinary research, to increase experiential learning for both undergraduate and graduate students, and to expand community engagement to align with the goals of MEZCOPH and the UArizona.  The Chair is expected to collaborate with other researchers at UArizona as well as with public health partners and collaborators throughout the state of Arizona and globally.

The Department leads the Epidemiology and Biostatistics MPH, MS, and PhD degree programs, a Population Health Data Science minor, and a Quantitative Track in the College’s Public Health Undergraduate Program. Faculty in the Department also contribute to other degree programs, including the College-wide One Health MPH degree, the Statistics Graduate Interdisciplinary Program (MS and PhD), and certificate programs within the UArizona.

The UArizona is a land grant university and Hispanic-serving institution situated in the desert Southwest along the US-Mexico Border.  The university serves high percentages of Hispanic and Native American students compared with other universities in the US. The environment and diverse populations present many unique health research questions. There are exciting opportunities to collaborate with departments and centers across campus including those focused on basic and applied research in cancer, toxicology, engineering, environmental science, ethnic studies, and life sciences.

The MEZCOPH is currently the only nationally accredited college of public health in the state of Arizona. The College has numerous innovative teaching, research, and service programs and is a valued partner in community-based research projects addressing health issues relevant to border communities and indigenous populations.

Just 60 miles from the Mexican border, Tucson is a vibrant, inclusive, urban environment with world class cuisine and a lively art scene. Located in the lush Sonoran Desert, famous for its monumental cacti and stunning sunsets, Tucson is surrounded by mountains reaching over 9000 feet enabling outdoor adventures of all sorts, including hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and even skiing. Tucson is easy to get around and is consistently rated as one of the top bicycling cities in the nation.

Review of applications will begin on September 30, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. The College is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty to create greater inclusivity and align more with the student body – minorities and women are encouraged to apply.
