Western Michigan University invites applications and nominations for two tenure-track positions in the Department of Chemistry in Kalamazoo, MI : a Faculty Specialist I and either an Assistant or Associate Professor. These are two of up to seven new positions in the WMU College of Arts and Sciences that are part of a faculty cluster established to build on our existing excellence in public health research and community engagement to create new and enhanced opportunities for collaborative, interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research, teaching, and community engagement focused on public health solutions (https://www.wmich.edu/arts-sciences/public-health-cluster-hire).
Position 1: Faculty Specialist I
Qualifications: Minimum qualifications are: a Master’s degree in Chemistry with concentration in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemistry Education, Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, or other chemistry area related to public health; at least one year of post-secondary teaching experience by August 2019; excellent oral and written communications skills. Preferred qualifications include: Ph.D. in Chemistry with concentration in the areas listed above; extensive post-secondary teaching experience; experience with evidence-based teaching practices; an interest in instructional innovation; a focus on Public Health education; interest in supporting and engaging students from diverse backgrounds
Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities will include excellence in teaching, student advising, and service to the department, college, and university. This calendar-year position will require instruction of nursing and other health pre-professional students, with the capability to teach in other areas of chemistry lecture and laboratory a plus. Position 2: Assistant or Associate Professor
Qualifications: Minimum qualifications are: a PhD in Medicinal, Organic, Analytical, Environmental or Biochemistry by August 2019; excellent oral and written communication skills; and a demonstrated strong commitment to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and to working with students, faculty, and staff with different cultural and economic backgrounds. Candidates should have experience and research interests in some area of public health, including, but not limited to, epigenetics and personalized medicine; detection, mitigation or remediation of environmental contamination (e.g., air or water quality); addiction or mental health; or preventative care practices. Preferred qualifications include: postdoctoral or equivalent experience; experience with evidence-based teaching practices; an interest in instructional innovation; departmental leadership potential; and a focus on supporting and engaging students from diverse backgrounds.
Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities will include excellence in teaching, establishment of an internationally-recognized research program that involves graduate and undergraduate students, actively seeking external funding to support research and scholarly activities, conducting and publishing scholarly research in peer-reviewed journals, student advising, and service to the department, college, and university. The position will require lecture and lab instruction. Scholarly activities will include research in their area of expertise, with the expectation that there will be collaborative and interdisciplinary interactions, likely with other researchers in the public health cluster.
