    Position Overview

    The Assistant or Associate Professor of Practice focuses on the American Sign Language and Deaf Studies and assists with program administration for the American Sign Language and Deaf Studies programs

    This position is a three-year, full-time, limited term, non-tenure-track, and is for a 12-month appointment. Estimated start date is August 1, 2019, ending July 31, 2022, with possibility to renew, based on evaluation.

    The successful applicant must have appropriate authorization to work in the US before employment begins.

    Job Description

    Position Responsibilities:

    80% Teaching
    Develop and teach six courses per academic year.
    Develop and teach courses focused on ASL and Deaf Studies, including: ASLD 305/705 American Sign Language V; ASLD 306/706 American Sign Language VI; ASLD 320/720 American Sign Language Linguistics; ASLD 321/721 Discourse Analysis of ASL; and other potential courses.
    Develop assignments, design class activities, respond to and evaluate student work in a timely manner, and assign grades. Adhere to department, college, and university policies.
    Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. A minimum of three posted offices hours each week is required.
    Some teaching time may be used to supervise students involved in internships or practicums.
    20% Program administration
    Recruitment and Admissions:
    Works with faculty to move toward enrollment goals in collaboration with Edwards Campus partners and tracks data in relation to these goals.
    Engage with community partners ensure strong pipelines and potential internship and practicum placements.
    Exams and Practicum Supervision:
    Manages and administers ASL placement tests for current and prospective students.
    Coordinates practicum supervision for graduate students.
    Campus Leadership:
    Participates regularly in the Edwards Campus Academic Leadership Council
    Provides leadership for program planning including the annual review each year

    Required Qualifications

    Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in CV, and (3) information provided from three professional references:

    A master’s degree from a nationally accredited university in American Sign Language, or closely related field, is expected by the start date of the appointment.
    At least five years of experience teaching ASL and/or Deaf Studies in higher education for the Assistant level OR at least eight years of experience teaching ASL and/or Deaf Studies in higher education for the Associate level.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Administrative experience with academic program administration in higher education.
    Demonstrated engagement with the Deaf Community and community partners.
