    Position Summary:

    The Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington (SPH-B) invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Health & Wellness Design. This is an open-rank search for applicants at all levels (assistant, associate, or full professors) who will demonstrate excellence in research in one of three focus areas aligned with our vision for "better health, by design":


    (1) health intervention design; and/or
    (2) implementation science; and/or
    (3) the intersection of health and the environment.


    These 10-month appointments would ideally start August 1, 2025, although an earlier or later start date is negotiable. Applications received by October 15, 2024, will receive full consideration, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled.


    The School of Public Health-Bloomington is located on the flagship campus of Indiana University and is comprised of over 200 faculty across five departments. Since rebranding to the Department of Health & Wellness Design in 2020, the department has grown rapidly, adding 10 tenured/tenure-track faculty, launching the Center for Health by Design, engineering a >1,000% increase in grant expenditures, >300% increase in faculty-led extramural grant submissions, and average grant budgets up by $500k per submission. The department has the world's first B.S. in Health & Wellness Design and is planning M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Health & Wellness Design to launch in 2026. The Department of Health & Wellness Design maintains strong connections to other STEMM departments and schools at Indiana University and health systems across the state.

    Qualifications:
    Candidates must hold a doctoral degree or professional doctorate (PhD, MD, DO, PharmD, DNP, etc.) in a relevant field from an accredited educational institution. A firm commitment to the role of diversity in all aspects of research, education and service is essential. Candidates must have teaching experience at the graduate or professional level. Good interpersonal skills, effective communication skills, and the ability to work cooperatively and congenially within a diverse faculty are required. Leadership skills and vision for enhancing the academic components of an interdisciplinary department are essential. Candidates for associate and full professor positions must also demonstrate a record of scholarly achievement appropriate for a senior career level, including extramurally funded research as a corresponding principal investigator, current funding or strong potential to secure external funding, and experience leading sizeable research initiatives.

    Additional Qualifications
    Responsibilities:
    Tenure-track faculty in the Department of Health & Wellness Design are expected to substantially contribute to the overall academic excellence of the department by developing and/or maintaining a robust research portfolio including pursuing and obtaining major extramural research funding to conduct cutting-edge research in modern public health science both as a corresponding principal investigator and a collaborating investigator; teaching and mentoring students at the undergraduate and/or graduate level as designated by the department chairperson; and actively providing service internally to the department, school and university and externally to the profession and/or the community.


    Areas of special interest and current faculty strengths include:



    • Lifestyle health behavior (nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, social and green activity)

    • Aging, disability, chronic illness, and caregiving;

    • Health equity and social determinants of health

    • Informatics, technology, and digital health

    • Brain health and mental health

    • Patient experience

    • Nonpharmacologic therapies and models of care


    Various approaches to design and innovation including human-centered design, community-based participatory research, intervention science, and implementation science.

    All research areas related to health will be considered, with preference given to research that is collaborative, synergistic with other SPH-B and Indiana University faculty, and aligns with major funding priorities.


    The successful candidate will further the department's culture of collaborative, impactful research, and will lead or contribute to applications for centers of excellence, research training programs, and similar collaborative initiatives to enhance research infrastructure and national reputation. Candidates should be enthusiastic about contributing to the training of future generations of health researchers and professionals, involving students in research, and developing education programs that reflect the future of health and healthcare. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop new courses and curricula in their area(s) of specialty. The department currently provides comprehensive support packages for doctoral students and dedicated support for graduate students from underrepresented groups or working on health equity.
