Research Scientist
Physiology and Biophysics
University at Buffalo, The State University of New York
Are you excited by the prospect of joining a team-first research laboratory focused on identifying neural mechanisms underlying learning, memory, and decision-making in health as well as understanding their dysfunction in disease states? The laboratory of Prof. Dheeraj Roy in the Physiology and Biophysics Department at UB has an exciting Research Scientist opportunity to pursue these neuroscience directions. Our lab is also part of the Neuroscience program at UB.
Our group will address these fundamental biological questions using cutting-edge molecular and systems neuroscience techniques, including single-nuclei and spatial transcriptomics, the development of novel reporter tools using CRISPR/Cas9 that permit cell type-specific targeting in live animals, circuit tracing using whole-brain imaging techniques, physiological recordings from live animals using genetically-encoded calcium indicators (i.e., using fiber photometry, single cell-compatible miniscopes), manipulating individual cell types and their circuits during behavior using optogenetics, and human organoid models. We combine these experiments with significant computational approaches including machine learning, neural network modeling, and statistical analyses. While our research will start with basic science questions, the longer-term goal is to apply our knowledge to human disease models with the hope of identifying candidate therapeutic manipulations, either molecular target- or circuit-based, that can be translated to higher species. For more information, please visit our lab website:
https://dsroy.lab.medicine.buffalo.edu/ Ideal candidates will be highly motivated to work on systems neuroscience and AI in the beautiful Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences building in downtown Buffalo. Candidates will play critical roles in:
Setting up molecular and neuroscience techniques/protocols (35% effort)
Efficiently performing foundational experiments (35% effort)
Be responsible for mentoring and training future members (15% effort)
Contributing to grant and manuscript preparation (15%)
Enjoy working in a highly collaborative environment (within the laboratory, department, school, and across universities)
