  • Bernard Grela is an Associate Professor and Associate Department Head in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at the University of Connecticut. He is an expert in the area of child language disorders and teaches courses in normal language acquisition, assessment and intervention for children with language pathologies, speech sound disorders, and literacy intervention for children with a history of language problems. His research focuses on the process of language development in typically developing children and language disorders in children. His work focuses on linguistic complexity and the impact of complexity on grammatical errors in children. This research stems from a background in cognitive psychology and psycholinguistics. He practiced as a speech-language pathologist for the Department of Health in Saskatchewan, Canada. He currently assists with clinical supervision through the UConn Speech and Hearing Clinic and provides clinical consultation for Connecticut public schools reviewing programs for children with ASD. He maintains his certificate of clinical competency (CCC-SLP) through the American Speech Language and Hearing Association and is a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist in the State of Connecticut. He obtained his Ph.D. (1999) and Masters (1989) degrees in Language Sciences from Purdue University and his Bachelors degree from the University of Saskatchewan (1985) majoring in Psychology.
