Workplace violence is a hallmark of unhealthy work environments. Using quantitative methods, Dr. Havaei has been exploring workplace violence as an antecedent of nurses’ psychological and physical health problems and as a sequel of unhealthy work environment conditions (e.g., work overload). Currently, Dr. Havaei is the primary investigator of a province-wide study of psychological health and safety in nurses’ workplaces across the province. This study will explore the 13 workplace risk factors, identified in the National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace, and the role they play in quality of healthcare delivery. Dr. Havaei’s research interests also include health human resource optimization strategies such as optimized scopes of practice and models of care delivery including staffing and skill mix. Her ultimate goal is to improve the quality and safety of healthcare services in Canada.
