Doctorate in Public Health with a designated emphasis on Women, Gender and Sexuality, a specialty area in International Health, and post doctoral studies in Community Based Participatory Research. Scholarship areas: youth and community empowerment, multicultural competence, media advocacy and violence prevention. At SFSU she teaches courses in Public Health, Community Organizing, Multicultural Women`s Health and Planning Programs for Adult Learners. A strand of Vivian’s teaching and research interests stems from her standpoint as a woman of color and concerns the mind/body split characteristic of higher education. To this end she has developed pedagogy of collegiality, a teaching approach that builds critical consciousness in learners. Doctor Chavez will be a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) summer 2005 upon completion of advanced studies in Iyengar yoga.
