Crouter’s main research interests are in the area of measuring physical activity and energy expenditure in adults and children using devices such as accelerometers, pedometers and heart rate monitors. Much of his work has been focused on improving how accelerometers are used to estimate energy expenditure in free-living children and adults and he has developed novel techniques for these estimations of energy expenditure using accelerometers. Currently Crouter is working on the use of machine learning algorithms for classification of activity type and prediction of energy expenditure using accelerometers worn at different body locations. Crouter is also investigating ways to reduce sedentary time in the workplace through the use of standing workstations and walking breaks.
