Her current research interests include prescription drug misuse and abuse and its outcomes including fatal overdose and neonatal abstinence syndrome, particularly related to opioids. Dr. Gurka has recently conducted a community-based participatory research project related to overdose prevention with naloxone in rural West Virginia (WV). She is also leading the evaluaiton for the CDC-funded Prescription Drug Overdose Boost for State Prevention project awarded to the WV Bureau for Public Health. Dr. Gurka has collaborated on numerous projects with clinical researchers in many of the health sciences including Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pharmacy and Nursing.
