Hirsh Health Law and Policy Professor,

a Tenure/Tenure Track Faculty Position at the Rank of Associate or Full Professor

The Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) of the George Washington University (GW) Milken Institute School of Public Health (GWSPH) invites applications for the Hirsh Health Law and Policy Professor, an endowed tenure/tenure track faculty position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, starting as early as July 1, 2024.  Academic rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.  The University, School, and Department have a strong commitment to achieving diversity among faculty and staff, and the Search Committee is particularly interested in receiving applications from members of underrepresented groups and strongly encourages women and Persons of Color to apply for this position.

As GWSPH is the only school of public health in the nation’s capital, faculty and students have an opportunity to work closely with government agencies, numerous foundations and non-governmental organizations, and think tanks in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.  Members of the HPM Department are leaders in their fields; have applied, real-world experience in health policy and law, public health, and health administration practice; appreciate people taking initiative; and are supportive and collegial.  The Department offers a number of degrees, including an MPH in health policy, an MHA both residentially and online, a PhD in health policy, and multiple joint degrees in collaboration with the GW Law School.  Department faculty are engaged in a wide variety of research projects focusing on health law, equity, social drivers of health, cross-sector public health partnerships, post-acute systems, health system leadership, health system reform, health informatics, public and private health care financing and pricing, health system innovation, healthcare quality, healthcare access and disparities, community health centers, health ethics, and the health workforce.

Job Description: The successful candidate will take a leading role in:

  • health law and policy work, including original, externally funded projects;
  • teaching;
  • serving as a key member of the Amicus Brief Writing project, a collaboration between GWSPH and leading law firms and the only initiative in the nation that regularly represents public health deans and scholars in pressing health-related litigation;
  • directing the Hirsh Health Law and Policy Program, including the advising of joint Public Health-Law degree candidates and serving as a liaison to the GW Law School’s Health Law and Policy Program; and
  • service to the University, School, and/or Department.

The successful candidate will bring and/or develop an externally funded portfolio and devote at least 50% of their effort to this work and up to 50% to teaching, service, and mentoring students.

Qualifications: Applicants must have:

  • at least a Juris Doctor (JD) degree or equivalent;
  • demonstrated evidence of experience in U.S. health law and policy;
  • experience writing legal briefs;
  • experience teaching and mentoring;
  • a solid publication record, which could include scholarly writing, brief writing, policy writing, or similar; and
  • demonstrated ability to obtain extramural funding.

How to Apply: Complete the online faculty application at https://www.gwu.jobs/postings/108567 and upload a curriculum vitae and a letter of interest describing relevant health law and policy experience, teaching and mentoring experience, publication record, and plans for maintaining or developing independently funded work.  Only complete applications will be considered.  Review of applications will begin on March 18, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled.  Employment offers are contingent on the satisfactory outcome of a standard background screening.  Please direct any questions to the HPM Faculty Search Committee, Milken Institute School of Public Health (e-mail: gwhpm@gwu.edu).

A Note About the Hirsh Professorship: Established in 1984 by Harold L. Hirsh, MD, JD, the Harold and Jane Hirsh Health Law and Policy Professor was created with the intention of supporting a professor who teaches courses related to health care law, ethics, and public policy (rather than “traditional courses in health care services administration”) and is “involved in appropriate research and other educational activities.”  When GWSPH was established in 1997 and GW’s program in health care administration was transferred to the new School, the Hirsh Professorship came with it.  For the past 20 years, Professor Sara Rosenbaum, JD (now retired) served as the Hirsh Professor.
