Job Description

Old Dominion University (ODU) is seeking an accomplished scholar for a full time, ten-month tenured endowed faculty position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the School of Exercise Science. This prestigious position offers a reduced teaching load, a competitive salary, and an annual research budget to lead high-impact research within the field of exercise science.

While exercise science has a long history at ODU, we have recently become our own academic unit in the Ellmer College of Health Sciences which, with the integration of Eastern Virginia Medical School, is now part of the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at ODU. The ten full time faculty members in the school teach and mentor students in the B.S. and M.S. Exercise Science programs and college-wide Kinesiology and Rehabilitation doctoral program. We have well equipped research facilities that include the Integrative Cardiometabolic Lab, Human Performance Lab, Neuromechanics Lab, as well as brand new Virtual Reality and Motion Analysis Labs. Our outreach to the community includes testing in our labs and exercise programs in the Wellness Institute & Research Center. There are many opportunities for research collaborations within the school, college, university, and with hospitals and military bases locally in the Hampton Roads region.

We are looking for candidates with a nationally recognized research program and a strong track record of securing external grant funding to elevate the research profile of our school and college while also mentoring junior faculty. Teaching responsibilities will be in the Kinesiology and Rehabilitation PhD, with some teaching in the B.S. and M.S. Exercise Science programs. The candidate will also be expected to mentor students in the Kinesiology and Rehabilitation doctoral program. Some service to the school, college, university, and profession is expected. The expectation for the endowed position is that high research productivity is continued and external grants with full indirect costs are obtained to support research. We are committed to maintaining a diverse and stable faculty. The appointment is effective July 25, 2025.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications

Earned doctorate in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, Motor Control and Learning, or similar content area.

Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities

  1. Eligibility for the rank of Associate Professor.
  2. Earned doctorate in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, Motor Control and Learning, or similar content area.
  3. Ongoing lead/senior author of research publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
  4. Record of ongoing external grant funding for research.
  5. Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
  6. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues.
  7. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  8. Proven ability to contribute to School/College/University service

Preferred Qualifications

  • A nationally visible research program as evidenced by invitations to speak at conferences, keynote presentations, roles on editorial boards etc.
  • Record of national grant funding (e.g. NIH, NSF, or private foundations)
  • Complement research within the School and College
  • Active participation in professional organizations within the field of exercise science
  • Experience or vision for leveraging the endowment to enhance departmental visibility, attract top students, and build new initiatives in research or community outreach
  • Record of successful mentorship of graduate students and junior faculty
