Position description

The Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology (NST) at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor faculty position in the broadly defined area of Environmental Impact on Human Metabolic Disease.

We are looking for an individual who has established a robust research program investigating the Environmental Impact on Human Metabolic Disease. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: the effects of nutrient intake on obesity and related disorders or malnutrition; the impact of various environmental interactions (such as biophysical, behavioral, socio-economic factors) on metabolic disorders; and the biological and molecular mechanisms that underlie these health effects, from molecular mediators to the regulation of metabolic fluxes or physiological processes.

This position encourages and supports research programs that have the potential to be translated into human applications, aiming to improve interventions or public policy that reduce the adverse health impacts of contemporary metabolic disorders. Applicants who study model organisms that may have translational potential for human metabolic disorders are welcome. This position will also optimally extend the campus's strength in understanding the impacts of socioeconomic status on human health and welfare.

NST focuses on the metabolic biology of nutrients in human health and disease and addresses current epidemics of metabolism-related diseases and conditions. NST offers a highly interactive environment with world-class research being conducted in a wide range of areas in Metabolic and Nutritional Biology. The appointee will benefit from access to PhD students in multiple interdepartmental programs and state-of-the-art core facilities and centers on campus. The appointee will contribute to the undergraduate education of students studying metabolic and nutritional biology. Numerous opportunities exist for interactions and collaborations with colleagues at UC Berkeley and in the Bay Area.

The Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology recognizes the intrinsic relationship between diversity and excellence in all our endeavors; we embrace open and equitable access to opportunities for learning and development of all members as our obligation and goal.

The Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.
