POSITION AVAILABLE: Associate/Full Professor of Teaching in Epidemiology

 QUALIFICATIONS: The School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis seeks an interdisciplinary Associate/Full Professor of Teaching in Epidemiology to advance its veterinary education and research mission through pedagogy of epidemiology in veterinary sciences. Professor of Teaching faculty are Academic Senate faculty members whose expertise and responsibilities center on instruction in epidemiology, and scholarly activities in epidemiology or involving pedagogy. The appointee is expected to lead five to eight courses per year as relevant to the School of Veterinary Medicine in professional, graduate, and/or undergraduate programs. An advanced graduate degree (PhD required) in epidemiology or related field, with experience in teaching as a lead instructor, is required. A veterinary medical degree (DVM or equivalent) is preferred. The successful candidate must have expertise in epidemiological methods and biostatistics. They must demonstrate successful application of epidemiology in collaborative settings involving topics such as disease surveillance, disease ecology, causal inference, risk factor analyses, clinical algorithm development, population health study designs, intervention evaluation, etc. Competence in an appropriate programming language (e.g. SAS, R, Stata) is required. A documented scholarly record or potential to develop innovative scholarly activities in epidemiology and/or pedagogy is required.

Demonstrated excellence in teaching is required, as is evidence of competence in teaching and engaging students with gaps in traditional mathematics training. Evidence of leadership skills is required. The individual must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial atmosphere. Preferred qualifications include documented success in the following areas: teaching large classes of 150 or more students, use of evidence-based teaching practices, use of modern instructional technologies, and the ability to identify and develop effective teaching strategies for varied levels of learner expertise in epidemiology.

SALARY: The salary range for this position is $202,200 – $338,300. Off-scale salaries and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, may be offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.

START DATE: Negotiable.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching: Responsibilities include: 1) developing course materials relevant to epidemiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine for DVM, MPVM, PhD, and undergraduate students; 2) participation in the graduate academic programs of the campus in relevant graduate groups; 3) participation in undergraduate teaching in the Global Disease Biology (GDB) program. Individual will be responsible for instructing and mentoring veterinary medical students, residents, graduate students, and post-doctoral scholars, and is expected to participate in epidemiology teaching for DVM students (e.g., VET401, VET414), serve as a course leader for basic and advanced epidemiology courses (e.g., EPI206, EPI207, PHR266, EPI290) as well as an undergraduate course for health sciences in GDB (VME158) in-person and/or online, and may develop courses in their area of expertise.

Professional and/or Scholarly Achievement: Development of a creative and productive scholarly program in epidemiology and/or the pedagogy of epidemiology is required. Mentoring support and/or collaboration with residents, students, and faculty are encouraged.

Service: University and public service through collaboration and consultation internally and externally regarding epidemiology topics, as well as service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education, and other appropriate means, is expected.
